With box-office receipts falling, Handel's productions were increasingly reliant on private subsidies from the nobility, and such funding became harder to obtain after the launch in 1730 of the " Opera of the Nobility "— a rival company to his own.

Concerned about the waning popularity and literary flaws of Handel's works, he launched a campaign through his own oratorio The Cure of Saul, performed at Covent Garden Theatre, and the publication of A Dissertation on Poetry and Music, and he almost certainly produced the first monograph of oratorio criticism, An Examination of the Oratorios which have been performed this Season, at Covent-Garden Theatre ( 1763 ).

" Later, Mozart assimilated Bach and Handel's music more fully into his own style, where it played a role in the creation of some of his most widely admired works.

Supported by friends of Ouseley, the library contained such important articles as the original score of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Handel's own conducting score from the Chester premiere of the Messiah.

He has hosted his own television show, Judge For Yourself, which was canceled due to low ratings and the lack of time in Handel's schedule.

Biographer Jan Swafford describes the Handel Variations as " perhaps the finest set of piano variations since Beethoven ", adding, " Besides a masterful unfolding of ideas concluding with an exuberant fugue with a finish designed to bring down the house, the work is quintessentially Brahms in other ways: the filler of traditional forms with fresh energy and imagination ; the historical eclectic able to start off with a gallant little tune of Handel's, Baroque ornaments and all, and integrate it seamlessly into his own voice, in a work of massive scope and dazzling variety.

While the suit was pending, Braham had the unusual experience of being hissed during a performance of Handel's Israel in Egypt ( the very piece cited by Lamb in his 1821 essay ), on which he stepped forward and addressed the audience:

Either Gluck or Lobkowitz bought a copy of Handel's Messiah.

Handel's instrumentation in the score is often imprecise, again in line with contemporary convention, where the use of certain instruments and combinations was assumed and did not need to be written down by the composer ; later copyists would fill in the details.

In 1950 John Tobin conducted a performance of Messiah in St Paul's Cathedral with the orchestral forces specified by the composer, a choir of 60, a counter-tenor alto soloist, and modest attempts at vocal elaboration of the printed notes, in the manner of Handel's day.

Handel's first biographer, John Mainwaring, wrote in 1760 that this conclusion revealed the composer " rising still higher " than in " that vast effort of genius, the Hallelujah chorus ".

Releases continued until 1992, including albums by Graham Fitkin, vocal duo Red Byrd, a recording of Erik Satie's Socrate, Piers Adams playing Handel's Recorder Sonatas, Walter Hus and further recordings both of Martland's compositions and of the composer playing Mozart.

After George Frideric Handel's death, in 1760 Stanley began a partnership with the composer John Christopher Smith and later with Thomas Linley, in order to continue with the series of oratorio performances at Covent Garden.

As a composer, Harty's best-known works from this period are his lavish reorchestrations of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks.

" After the 1796 performance of Belcher's Ordination Anthem, parts of which bear resemblance to Handel's famous Messiah chorus, a Maine newspaper dubbed the composer ' the Handell of Maine '.

Jennens commented that the Sinfony contains " passages far unworthy of Handel, but much more unworthy of the Messiah "; Handel's early biographer Charles Burney merely found it " dry and uninteresting ".

She was seen and heard around the world in 1981 by an estimated 600 million people when she sang Handel's " Let the Bright Seraphim " at the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer.

He owed to his vocal mentor Charles Santley a taste and technique perfectly suited to oratorio, of which Handel's Messiah was his favourite work.

In 1967 he recorded for EMI a standout performance of Basil Lam's " baroque " version of Handel's " Messiah ", with Elizabeth Harwood ( soprano ), Janet Baker ( mezzo soprano ), Paul Esswood ( counter tenor ), and Raimund Herincx ( bass ), with the English Chamber Orchestra, leader Emanuel Hurwitz, and the Ambrosian Singers and Maurits Sillem, harpsichord continuo, with Sir Charles Mackerras conducting.

It contains portraits of Handel and Charles Jennens, Handel's friend and librettist of Messiah.

Burney wrote, " He now copied the hasty, light and flimsy style which reigned in Italy at this time, and which Handel's solidity and science had taught the English to despise.

Handel composed more than forty operas in over thirty years, and since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and original instrumentation, interest in Handel's operas has grown.

Handel and his father travelled to Weissenfels to visit either Handel's half-brother, Carl, or nephew, Georg Christian, who was serving as valet to Duke Johann Adolf I. Handel and the duke convinced his father to allow him to take lessons in musical composition and keyboard technique from Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, the organist of Halle's Marienkirche.

He was certainly devoted to Handel's music, having helped to finance the publication of every Handel score since Rodelinda in 1725.

At the Handel Festival held in 1922 in Handel's native town, Halle, his choral works were given by a choir of 163 and an orchestra of 64.

In London the previous year, Senesino, a singer who had been a part of Handel's " Second Academy " which performed at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, quarrelled with Handel and established a rival company, the Opera of the Nobility, operating from a theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields.

The Hospital's Chapel organ was Handel's gift, and Handel himself directed eleven performances of the Messiah there, so raising 7, 000 Pounds for the charity.

After the break-up of Handel's Royal Academy in 1728, Senesino sang in Paris ( 1728 ) and Venice ( 1729 ), but was re-engaged by Handel in 1730, singing in four more new operas and in the oratorios Esther, Deborah, and, in its 1732 bilingual version, Acis and Galatea.

In 1984, she sang the title role of Handel's opera seria Rinaldo ( directed by Frank Corsaro ), the first Handel opera ever performed at the Met.

In Rome, Handel met Cardinal Vincenzo Grimani, a diplomat and spare-time librettist ; the result of this meeting was a collaboration which produced Handel's second Italian opera, Agrippina.

Henry Purcell and George Frideric Handel composed hornpipes, and Handel occasionally gave " alla hornpipe " as a tempo indication ( see Handel's Water Music ).

Choral recordings include works by Bach, Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi, with King's College Choir under Stephen Cleobury, and several recordings with Edward Higginbottom and New College Choir, including Pergolesi's Marian Vespers and Handel's Coronation Anthems, a collection of music from 17th and 18th-century English coronations.

The music was adapted and arranged to Watts ' lyrics by Lowell Mason in 1839 from an older melody which was then believed to have originated from Handel, not least because the theme of the refrain ( And heaven and nature sing ...) appears in the orchestra opening and accompaniment of the recitative Comfort ye from Handel's Messiah, and the first four notes match the beginning of the choruses Lift up your heads and Glory to God from the same oratorio.

Modern critical opinion is that Agrippina is Handel's first operatic masterpiece, full of freshness and musical invention which have made it one of the most popular operas of the continuing Handel revival.

By the later standards of Handel's London operas this scoring is light, but there are nevertheless what Dean and Knapp describe as " moments of splendour when Handel applies the full concerto grosso treatment.
