The most eminent Scandinavian to serve in the Varangian Guard was Harald Hardrada, who subsequently established himself as king of Norway ( 1047 – 66 ).

King Harald Hardrada of Norway also had a claim to the throne as the uncle and heir of King Magnus I, who had made a pact with Harthacnut in about 1040 that if either Magnus or Harthacnut died without heirs, the other would succeed.

Harold's brother Tostig and Harald Hardrada invaded Northumbria in September 1066, and defeated the local forces under Morcar and Edwin at the Battle of Fulford near York.

This strengthened his acceptability as Edward's successor, but fatally split his own family, driving Tostig into alliance with King Harald Hardrada (" Hard Ruler ") of Norway.

Magnus I of Norway ( reigned 1035 – 1047 ), who wasn't a warlord, had reigned for more than a decade when his uncle Harald Hardrada ( reigned 1047 – 1066 ) challenged his rule.

His successor, King Harald Hardrada attempted the invasion of England in 1066, but was beaten and killed at the battle of Stamford Bridge, an event which is generally considered the end of the Viking Age.

Kaj Harald Leininger Munk ( commonly called Kaj Munk ) ( 13 January 1898 – 4 January 1944 ) was a Danish playwright and Lutheran pastor, known for his cultural engagement and his martyrdom during the Occupation of Denmark of World War II.

He was born Kaj Harald Leininger Petersen on the island of Lolland, Denmark, and raised by a family named Munk after the death of his parents.

On his success, Ketil was to rule the Sudreys as a vassal of King Harald.
