* 1958 – A team of rock climbers led by Warren Harding completes the first ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley.

* A hit teen drama, Roswell, aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s, focuses on four teenage alien-human hybrids, Max Evans, Isabel Evans, Michael Guerin and Tess Harding living in Roswell, New Mexico.

Early in their marriage, Harding bestowed on her the lasting nickname " Duchess " as a nod to the imperious ( and often alienating ) persona she shared with her father.

Harding also was accused of collusion with other newspapers on the price-fixing of public printing bids and dividing the profits from low-straw biddings.

No formal charges were made against Harding based on these accusations.

Nevertheless, the party bosses stuck by Herrick, and Harding took his name out of the running for any position on the ticket, which was defeated by the Democrats.

While Harding was dwindling politically, there were developments on the personal and business front.

Henry Daugherty at this point was on a first name basis with Harding and supported his campaign.

The election came on the heels of the outbreak of World War I — an issue Harding downplayed due to the significant German immigrant population in his district.

Harding was often considered a fence sitter on most issues, be that labor, big business, women's suffrage, or prohibition.

Harding took on a personal secretary in the Senate, George B. Christian, Jr., a former neighbor, who protected him from political patrons and intrusive inquiries, and served until the future president's death.

Harding introduced 134 bills, but substantively his six-year record as Senator was unremarkable ; his attendance was inconsistent, he spoke minimally on the floor of the Senate and offered no major bill or debate.

Harding was not even present for the vote on the women's suffrage amendment, though he " paired " his vote with another member, in effect supporting it.

Although Harding did not share Leese's view and 8th Army planning staff had already rejected the idea of an Adriatic offensive ( because it would be difficult to bring the necessary concentration of forces to bear ), Alexander was not prepared to force Leese to adopt a plan which was against his inclination and judgment and Harding was persuaded to change his mind.

According to his memoirs, then-AW head writer Harding Lemay said that Dwyer was fired because she relied too heavily on cue cards and didn't bother memorizing lines, Courtney was fired because her acting was deemed too " soap operatic ," and Reinholt was fired due to the fact that he had openly clashed with both Rauch and Lemay over the direction of the series and had become difficult to deal with.

Republicans nonetheless retained a narrow majority, although splits in the party made it difficult for Harding to govern.

The hardest climb of the era, the Lost Arrow Spire Chimney, has a horrible, squeezing, dark and difficult pitch named for his lead: the " Harding Hole ".

This was followed by: the wildly overhanging Leaning Tower, also done with Denny and still one of the most popular big-wall routes in Yosemite ; the North Face of the ' Rostrum ' just outside Yosemite Valley, again with Denny ( a notoriously hard and spectacular later one-day testpiece as a free climb ); and the beautiful and isolated 2500 foot face of Mount Watkins across from Half Dome, done with Yvon Chouinard and Chuck Pratt ( with ' hard man ' Harding famously refusing water on the parched last days of the climb to save it for those doing the final leads ).

Harding went further and viewed the race problem as a national and international issue and desired that the sectionalism of the Solid South and black membership of the Republican party be broken up.
