Presented as " Newman Laugh-O-Grams ", Disney's cartoons became widely popular in the Kansas City area and through their success, he was able to acquire his own studio, also called Laugh-O-Gram, for which he hired a vast number of additional animators, including Fred Harman's brother Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, and his close friend Ubbe Iwerks.

Harman and Ising retained the rights to Bosko and began making Bosko cartoons at Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer in 1935.
However these cartoons were not a success and in 1937 MGM fired Harman and Ising and purchased their studio to create MGM cartoons, thus obtaining the rights to Bosko.
In the early 1950s, Warner Bros. sold its black-and-white Looney Tunes ( plus the black-and-white Merrie Melodies made after Harman and Ising left ) into television syndication through their subsidiary Sunset Productions.
Since Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising had left the studio in 1933, taking the studio's star character Bosko with them, Looney Tunes had been kept afloat by cartoons featuring the bland Buddy.

While things were going in Mintz's favor, animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising asked Universal head Carl Laemmle to remove Mintz, suggesting they would be the ones to continue the Oswald series.

However they failed to make a success in the theaters, and in 1937 the Bosko and Happy Harmonies series were discontinued and MGM replaced Harman and Ising with Fred Quimby.

Harman still held out hope to become a major city in the region-billing itself the " Pittsburgh of the South " by its mayor in an effort to attract a steel refining industry alongside the railyards.
In 1927, Harman and Ising were still working for the Walt Disney Studios on a series of live-action / animated short subjects known as the Alice Comedies.
