Joseph Harold Greenberg ( May 28, 1915 – May 7, 2001 ) was a prominent American linguist, principally known for his work in two areas, linguistic typology and the genetic classification of languages.

Meyer Schapiro, and Leo Steinberg along with Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg were important art historians of the post-war era who voiced support for abstract expressionism.

Such was Greenberg's influence as an art critic that Tom Wolfe in his 1975 book The Painted Word identified Greenberg as one of the " kings of cultureburg ", alongside Harold Rosenberg and Leo Steinberg.

The best-known examples of the questionable advice given by the English witenagemot are when on January 5, 1066 it approved the succession to the kingship of Harold Godwinson ( Harold Godwin ) following the death of Edward the Confessor, and 50 years earlier, in 1016, it had approved the splitting of the kingdom between the Saxon Edmund II and the Danish king Canute.

Harold reigned from 6 January 1066 until his death at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October of that same year, fighting the Norman invaders led by William the Conqueror during the Norman conquest of England.

About January 1066, Harold married Edith ( or Ealdgyth ), daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia, and widow of the Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.

When the Witenagemot convened the next day, they selected Harold to succeed, and his coronation followed on 6 January, most likely held in Westminster Abbey, however there is no surviving evidence from the time to confirm this.

In early January 1066, hearing that Harold had been crowned, Duke William II of Normandy began plans to invade by building 700 warships and transports at Dives-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast.

Edward probably entrusted the kingdom to Harold and Edith shortly before he died on 4 or 5 January 1066.

On 6 January he was buried in Westminster Abbey, and Harold was crowned on the same day.
