Mad is an American humor magazine founded by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines in 1952.

Written almost entirely by Harvey Kurtzman, the first issue also featured illustrations by Kurtzman himself, along with Wally Wood, Will Elder, Jack Davis and John Severin.

Its approach was described by Dave Kehr in The New York Times: " Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding on the radio, Ernie Kovacs on television, Stan Freberg on records, Harvey Kurtzman in the early issues of Mad: all of those pioneering humorists and many others realized that the real world mattered less to people than the sea of sounds and images that the ever more powerful mass media were pumping into American lives.

Among the loudest of those who insist the magazine is no longer funny are supporters of Harvey Kurtzman, who had the good critical fortune to leave Mad after just 28 issues, before his own formulaic tendencies might have become obtrusive.

In 2009, an interviewer proposed to Al Jaffee, " There's a group of Mad afficionados who feel that if Harvey Kurtzman had stayed at Mad, the magazine would not only have been different, but better.

" Jaffee, a Kurtzman enthusiast, replied, " And then there's a large group who feel that if Harvey had stayed with Mad, he would have upgraded it to the point that only fifteen people would buy it.

During high school, he began to avidly read Mad magazine, which was then edited by Harvey Kurtzman ; this later influenced his work.

Bakshi enlisted comic book and pulp fiction artists and writers Harvey Kurtzman, Lin Carter, Gray Morrow, Archie Goodwin, Wally Wood and Jim Steranko to work at the studio.

Crumb has cited Carl Barks, who illustrated Disney's " Donald Duck " comic books and John Stanley ( Little Lulu ) as formative influences on his narrative approach, as well as Harvey Kurtzman.

With Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Gary Panter, and Chris Ware, Crumb was among the artists honored in the exhibition " Masters of American Comics " at the Jewish Museum in New York City, New York, from September 16, 2006 to January 28, 2007.

Gaines converted Mad to a magazine in 1955, partly to retain the services of its talented editor Harvey Kurtzman, who had received offers from elsewhere.

In Mad # 4 ( April – May 1953 ), The Shadow was spoofed by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder.

His editors, Al Feldstein and Harvey Kurtzman, who also drew covers and stories, gave assignments to such prominent and highly accomplished freelance artists as Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Will Elder, George Evans, Frank Frazetta, Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Bernard Krigstein, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Al Williamson, Basil Wolverton, and Wally Wood.

Schwartz and writer-editor Harvey Kurtzman were awarded the 2006 Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing.

A compromise was reached, and starting in 1988, the Kirby Award was discontinued and two new awards were created: the Eisner Award, managed by Olbrich ; and the Fantagraphics-managed Harvey Award, named for cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman.

" ( 1947 ) and " Little Fanny Gooney " ( 1952 ), were almost certainly an inspiration to Harvey Kurtzman when he created his irreverent Mad, which began in 1952 as a comic book that specifically parodied other comics in the same subversive manner.

In the fall of 1956, shortly after the departure of Mads founding editor Harvey Kurtzman, Drucker found his way to Mad.

Interestingly enough, the unofficial mascot of Harvey Mudd ( featured on many college handbooks and other publications ) is one of these concrete blocks with a face, arms, and legs, named " Wally the Wart.

Some former well-known personalities on the station include longtime morning hosts Wally Phillips, Bob Collins, Spike O ' Dell, Paul Harvey and Roy Leonard.

Like other independent television outlets in the United States, KTRG aired reruns of off-network and first-run syndicated shows like Jeff's Collie, The Texan, Riverboat, Leave It To Beaver and Supercar, as well as producing local shows like The Gripe Box ( a talk show ), Wally & Harvey ( which featured The Little Rascals shorts ) and a Monday through Friday newscast that aired at 10PM billed as The Big News, anchored by Wayne Collins.

He made 148, his first Test century at Lords, and became the sixth batsman to make 6, 000 Test runs after Wally Hammond, Don Bradman, Len Hutton, Neil Harvey and Colin Cowdrey.

* As with many classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Wally Gator was the subject of an episode of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, voiced by Maurice LaMarche, where he is characterized as a backwoods hick railing against the establishment.

In the last match of the season, Western Australian captain Wally Langdon declared early on the last afternoon to allow Harvey another innings so he could break the record.

The injury forced Benaud out of the next Test, meaning that Harvey finally captained Australia at the highest level, in the Second Test at Lord's, with Davidson carrying an injury and wicketkeeper Wally Grout with a black eye.

The final Superintendent for Dimondale was Harvey E. Wood, a school administrator who later moved to Holt's system as the Transportation Manager, then eventually to Ingham Intermediate School District ( IISD ) as Vice Superintendent.

These included leading Northern Irish musician Van Morrison, British blues pioneer Alexis Korner as well as Ronnie Wood, Alex Harvey and Mick Jagger ; folk musicians Martin Carthy, John Renbourn and Ashley Hutchings ; rock musicians Roger Daltrey, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Robin Trower and David Gilmour ; and popular beat music successes Graham Nash and Allan Clarke of The Hollies.

This was resected by Harvey Cushing at that time, and Wood made a full recovery until the tumor later recurred.

The film stars Natalie Wood, Steve McQueen, Edie Adams, Herschel Bernardi and Harvey Lembeck.

During this time, she had minor roles in film and television, including Sister, Sister, Smart Guy, The Steve Harvey Show, Get Real, The Wood and American Pie.

Despite being retired, Gordon often finds himself drawn to a series of life-and-death circumstances, such as the Joker sending him flowers during Last Laugh, or being contacted by the temporarily-reformed Harvey Dent to stop Batman from killing the Joker, to being kidnapped by Francis Sullivan, grandson of one of Gotham's notorious serial killers, during the Made of Wood storyline.
