In 1974, Hayek shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences ( with Gunnar Myrdal ) for his " pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and ... penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena.

During his years at the University of Vienna, Carl Menger's work on the explanatory strategy of social science and Friedrich von Wieser's commanding presence in the classroom left a lasting influence on Hayek.

Following his retirement, Hayek spent a year as a visiting professor of philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he continued work on Law, Legislation and Liberty, teaching a graduate seminar by the same name and another on the philosophy of social science.

Hayek was defended by Professor Antony Flew who stated that the German Social Democrats, unlike the British Labour Party, had, since the late 1950s, abandoned public ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange and had instead embraced the social market economy.

In 1978, Hayek came into conflict with the Liberal Party leader, David Steel, who claimed that liberty was possible only with " social justice and an equitable distribution of wealth and power, which in turn require a degree of active government intervention " and that the Conservative Party were more concerned with the connection between liberty and private enterprise than between liberty and democracy.

Hayek posited that a central planning authority would have to be endowed with powers that would impact and ultimately control social life, because the knowledge required for centrally planning an economy is inherently decentralized, and would need to be brought under control.

In the latter half of his career Hayek made a number of contributions to social and political philosophy, which he based on his views on the limits of human knowledge, and the idea of spontaneous order in social institutions.

Hayek disapproved of the notion of ' social justice '.

" As referenced above in the section on " The economic calculation problem ", Hayek wrote that " there is no reason why ... the state should not help to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance ...." Summarizing on this topic, Wapshott writes " advocated mandatory universal health care and unemployment insurance, enforced, if not directly provided, by the state.

In his philosophy of science, which has much in common with that of his good friend Karl Popper, Hayek was highly critical of what he termed scientism: a false understanding of the methods of science that has been mistakenly forced upon the social sciences, but that is contrary to the practices of genuine science.

Hayek points out that much of science involves the explanation of complex multivariable and nonlinear phenomena, and the social science of economics and undesigned order compares favourably with such complex sciences as Darwinian biology.

Conservatives, he says, are not averse to change – but like Hayek, they are highly averse to change being imposed on the social order by people in authority who think they know how to run things better.

Hayek: economist and social philosopher

The most important social structures, including the laws (" nomos ") governing the relations between individual persons, are emergent, according to Hayek.

The most complete rejection of the concept of social justice comes from Friedrich Hayek of the Austrian School of economics:

Erhard wrote, “ I would like to frankly acknowledge that my own contribution to this effort social market economy -- R. P. would not have been possible without Walter Eucken, Franz Bohm, Wilhem Ropke, Alexander Rustow, F. A. von Hayek, Alfred Muller-Armack, and many others who joined me in thinking and debating ”.

Hayek did not like the expression “ social market economy ”, but he noticed in 1976 that some of his friends in Germany had succeeded in implementing the sort of social order for which he was pleading while using that phrase.

Due to the ignorance of the individual, Hayek argued that an individual could not understand which of the various political, economic and social rules they had followed had made them successful.

The term frequently implies a critique of the more extreme expressions of logical positivism and has been used by social scientists such as Friedrich Hayek, philosophers of science such as Karl Popper, and philosophers such as Hilary Putnam to describe the dogmatic endorsement of scientific methodology and the reduction of all knowledge to only that which is measurable.

Friedrich Hayek said: " Perhaps the government of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman ... should be regarded as the last Liberal government of the old type, while under his successor, H. H. Asquith, new experiments in social policy were undertaken which were only doubtfully compatible with the older Liberal principles ".

Spencer anticipated many of the analytical standpoints of later libertarian theorists such as Friedrich Hayek, especially in his " law of equal liberty ", his insistence on the limits to predictive knowledge, his model of a spontaneous social order, and his warnings about the " unintended consequences " of collectivist social reforms.

Economist F. A. Hayek has argued that the second generation concept of " social justice " cannot have any practical political meaning:

Hayek saw not only equality of opportunity but all of social justice as a " mirage ".

McCain identifies as a supporter of Austrian economic theory in the vein of Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek such that he thinks that government imposition of broader social goals such as " social justice " cannot practically work out.

" While calling Hayek " 100 % right " in his critique of the pure command economy, he writes " However, in no way does it follow, as many Hayek disciples seem to believe, that government is per se bad and unproductive while the private sector is, per se good and productive.

Hence, after 1919, Hayek's legal name became " Friedrich Hayek ", not " Friedrich von Hayek ".

Friedrich Hayek argued in 1977 that " prices are an instrument of communication and guidance which embody more information than we directly have ", and therefore " the whole idea that you can bring about the same order based on the division of labor by simple direction falls to the ground ".

Within heterodox economics, the paradox was criticized by the Austrian School economist and Nobel Prize winner Friedrich Hayek in a 1929 article, " The ' Paradox ' of Savings ", attacking the paradox as proposed by Foster and Catchings.
