His " Reply to Hayne " in 1830 was regarded as " the most eloquent speech ever delivered in Congress.

Some notable persons either born in or who resided in Columbia County include: Oliver Hardy ( comedian, born in Harlem ), Paul Hamilton Hayne ( poet and author ), Henry Louis Benning ( Confederate general for whom Fort Benning is named ), William Few, Abraham Baldwin, George Walton, George W. Crawford, William H. Crawford ( presidential candidate in 1824 ), Thomas Watson ( populist leader and Georgia senator born in Thomson when it was still in Columbia County ), George McDuffie ( South Carolina governor and senator in the early 19th century ), Jesse Mercer ( a long-time preacher in the county for whom Mercer University is named ).

In 1831, after being chosen as the county seat of Lowndes County, the town was officially named Hayneville in honor of Robert Y. Hayne, governor of South Carolina and a U. S. senator.

Later it was moved to Hayne ’ s Corners, one and one-half mile south of the present village, and Henry Densmore was postmaster.

The municipal water system draws from the huge Castle Hayne aquifer ; the town was not adversely impacted by the severe drought of 2007-8 that affected most of the state.

In 1699 legislation was passed to permit the Aire & Calder Navigation which was opened 1703, and the Trent Navigation which was built by George Hayne and opened in 1712.

Thus, at the time Grimké was unaware ( and therefore, uninfluenced by ) events such as the Webster – Hayne debates and the Maysville Road veto, as well as controversial public figures such as Frances Wright.

In a battle of toasts, Hayne proposed, “ The Union of the States, and the Sovereignty of the States .” Jackson ’ s response, when his turn came, was, “ Our Federal Union: It must be preserved .” To those attending, the effect was dramatic.

The Baronet's seat was Hayne, whilst the 5th Baronet married the heiress of Stafford, of Pynes.

Pynes was recently sold, and the present Earl lives at Hayne.

Contemporary with Dufay were composers such as Gilles Binchois, who was at the Burgundian court between approximately 1430 and 1460, and Hayne van Ghizeghem, a composer, singer and soldier who may have been killed in the last military campaign of Charles the Bold.

Hayne van Ghizeghem (– 1476 – 1497 ) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the early Renaissance Burgundian School.

Charles took his musicians along with him on his campaigns, because he loved music as much as war, and insisted on entertainment ; however Hayne was the only one of his famous musicians known to be also outfitted as a soldier.

He is known to have been at the Siege of Beauvais in 1472, where Charles was decisively repulsed by the French, and Hayne was long presumed by scholars to have been killed in that battle.

Also in 1467 Busnois was listed along with Hayne van Ghizeghem and Adrien Basin as a " chantre et valet de chambre " to Charles.

In addition, music by the composers favored the previous dukes of Burgundy such as Charles the Bold – Adrien Basin, Gilles Joye, Hayne van Ghizeghem, and Robert Morton – was also probably still being performed and studied.

Only one life was lost, that of a heroic Englishman, Al Hayne who risked and lost his life helping women and children escape from the flames.

Paul Hamilton Hayne ( January 1, 1830 – July 6, 1886 ) was a nineteenth century Southern American poet, critic, and editor.

Paul Hamilton Hayne was born in Charleston, South Carolina on January 1, 1830.

After losing his father as a young child, Hayne was reared by his mother in the home of his prosperous and prominent uncle, Robert Y. Hayne, who was an orator and politician who served in the United States Senate.

Joseph Hayne, a button-moulder who owned a shop nearby, also ran a tavern named the Black Lion off Drury Lane, which he encouraged the local apprentices to frequent.

Hayne is also noteworthy for his friendship with fellow Southern poet Henry Timrod, whom Hayne helped with both his life and his career.

Justice Gummow also often joins with Justice Hayne ; in 2006 this number was 40 ( 75. 47 %) joint judgments.

She is also engaged to one Kinsey Hayne.

Lord Stockton renovated Hayne Manor with his current wife Miranda, in Devon, and listed it for sale.

Timrod's friend and fellow poet, Paul Hamilton Hayne, posthumously edited and published The Poems of Henry Timrod, with more of Timrod's more famous poems in 1873, including his " Ode: Sung on the Occasion of Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead at Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, S. C., 1867 " and " The Cotton Boll ".

Timrod was frail and ill throughout his life with tuberculosis, and Hayne helped to provide financially for Timrod and his wife and young son.

Later, she began teaching pottery and basket-weaving with Reynell to shell shocked soldiers at the Seale Hayne Military Hospital in Devonshire.

Hayne has been described as being a part of a ' core ' of judges on the High Court, usually forming the majority, and often writes joint reasons with Justice William Gummow.

The long relatively peaceful period at the court under Philip the Good's reign ended with Philip's death in 1467, and under his successor Charles the Bold, the musical activities of the court were seriously disrupted ; many of the singers and composers, including Hayne van Ghizeghem, took part in his many futile military campaigns.

This angered Southern leaders and brought Webster into dispute with South Carolina's Robert Young Hayne, later evolving to what would be the Webster-Hayne debate.

Because of this debate, Hayne is generally remembered more for being the disputant with Webster, and for being on the receiving end of a famous speech, than for anything else he did while in Congress.
