Sterne is best known for his novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, for which he became famous not only in England, but throughout Europe.

After working as a journeyman cabinet maker in London, in 1754, he became the first cabinet-maker to publish a book of his designs, titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director.

He became a major star that year with the film American Gigolo, followed by the romantic drama An Officer and a Gentleman, which grossed almost $ 130 million in 1982.

At a later date he received the place of Gentleman Usher to Prince Charles, son of James VI of Scotland, and continued in favour at court after Prince Charles became Charles I of England in 1625.

This was an honorary post, but in 1621 he became a Gentleman Ordinary and organist under his friend and senior organist, Orlando Gibbons.

He became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber and inherited his father's great feudal title, Lord of Bowland.

After William became King, he appointed Lumley in rapid succession in 1689 / 90 as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber, a member of the Privy Council, Colonel of the 1st Troop of Horse Guards ( until 1699 ), Viscount Lumley of Lumley Castle, Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland and Lord Lieutenant of Durham.

Being now a peer, Dudley became Lord Admiral and a Knight of the Garter in 1543 ; he was also admitted to the Privy Council.

Under the young King Edward VI, Guildford's father became Lord President of the Privy Council and de facto ruled England from 1550 – 1553.

In 1434 he became member of the Privy Council of Sweden and in October of the same year he assumed one of its most senior offices, Lord High Constable of Sweden, or Riksmarsk.

When his father-in-law Lord Grey ( see below ) became prime minister in 1830, Durham was sworn of the Privy Council and appointed Lord Privy Seal.
