Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot ( 1748 – 1831 ) spent ten years studying North American birds and wrote the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de l ' Amerique septentrionale ( 1807-1808 ?).

In his Histoire Naturelle ( 1749 ), Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, wrote of the " Black Cougar ": " M. de la Borde, King ’ s physician at Cayenne, informs me, that in the American Continent there are three species of rapacious animals ; that the first is the jaguar, which is called the tiger ; that the second is the couguar, called the red tiger, on account of the uniform redness of his hair ; that the jaguar is of the size of a large bull-dog, and weighs about 200 pounds ; that the cougar is smaller, less dangerous, and not so frequent in the neighbourhood of Cayenne as the jaguar ; and that both these animals take six years in acquiring their full growth.

Vonnegut also wrote a companion libretto to Igor Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat, or A Soldier's Tale, which tells Slovik's story.

Besides numerous minor works, wrote a Théorie générale des équations algébriques, published at Paris in 1779, which in particular contained much new and valuable matter on the theory of elimination and symmetrical functions of the roots of an equation: he used determinants in a paper in the Histoire de l ' académie royale, 1764, but did not treat the general theory.

In 1829 he wrote the book Histoire de la Louisiane et la cession de cette colonie par la France aux Etats-Unis de l ' Amérique septentrionale ; précédée d ' un discours sur la constitution et le gouvernement des Etats-Unis (" History of Louisiana and of Its Cession to the United States of Northern America ; Preceded by a Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States ").

He became official historian to the king, and in that capacity wrote a fragmentary Histoire de Louis XIV, covering the years 1660 to 1670.

He was thus a member both of the Academy of Inscriptions and of the Academy of Sciences ; and in 1697 he became perpetual secretary to the latter, an office he held for forty-two years ; and it was in this official capacity that he wrote the Histoire du renouvellement de l ' Académie des Sciences ( Paris, 3 vols., 1708, 1717, 1722 ) containing extracts and analyses of the proceedings, and also the éloges of the members, written with great simplicity and delicacy.

He wrote Histoire des Girondins in 1847 in praise of the Girondists.

He wrote widely on philosophy, politics and ethics, on idealistic lines: La Famille, Histoire de la philosophie dans l ' antiquité et dans le temps moderne, Histoire de la science politique, Philosophie de la Revolution Française, etc.

Here he wrote in 1793 the Histoire du Clergé pendant la Revolution Française.

He wrote a Histoire politique de la Revolution française ( 1901 ), and a number of articles which were collected in volumes under the title Etudes et leçons sur la Révolution française ( 9 vols., 1893-1924 ).

He communicated more than one hundred and fifty papers to the French Academy of Sciences, edited the Connoissance de temps ( 1759 – 1774 ), and again ( 1794 – 1807 ), and wrote the concluding two volumes of the 2nd edition of Montucla's Histoire des mathématiques ( 1802 ).

From Claude Charles Fauriel he learned to use primary sources ; and by the aid of the Latin chronicles and the collection of Anglo-Saxon laws, he wrote Histoire de la Conquête de l ' Angleterre par les Normands ( History of the Conquest of England by the Normans ), the appearance of which was greeted with great enthusiasm ( 1825 ).

Napoleon said of him that, his genius grew bolder as it grew older, and a later author, the duc d ' Aumale ( Histoire des princes de la maison de Condé ), took the same view when he wrote: " Pour le connaître il faut le suivre jusqu ' à Sulzbach.

In the 1943 edition of his famous Histoire du cinéma, Robert Brasillach wrote that the film was amongst Renoir's most jumbled and confused but applauded the biting satire, which he considered Proustian, and the technical variation employed by the director, ultimately concluding that the film was an unrealised masterpiece.

After the Franco-Prussian War Lavisse studied the development of Prussia and wrote Etude sur l ' une des origines de la monarchie prussienne, ou la Marche de Brandebourg sous la dynastie ascanienne, which was his thesis for his doctor's degree, and Etudes sur l ' Histoire de la Prusse ( 1879 ).

David Chalmers of Ormond in his Histoire abbregée ( 1572 ) wrote about the French, English and Scottish monarchies, relying on Boece for the Scottish account.

At this period of his life he wrote Grégoire de Tours et Marius d ' Avenche ( 1872 ); Frédégaire, whose history, taken from original manuscripts, he published in 1885 ; a translation of a book of W. Junghans, Histoire critique des règnes de Childerich et de Chlodovech, with introduction and notes ( 1879 ); Études critiques sur les sources de l ' histoire carolingienne ( 1898, 1st part only published ); and Bibliographie de l ' histoire de France ( 1888 ).

He was the editor, from its commencement in 1846, of the Histoire universelle, publiée par une société de professeurs et de savants, for which he himself wrote a " Histoire sainte d ' après la Bible ," " Histoire grecque ," " Histoire romaine ," " Histoire du moyen âge ," " Histoire des temps modernes ," and " Abrégé de l ' histoire de France.

An eminent member of this school, Georges Duby, wrote in the foreword of his book Le dimanche de Bouvines that the history he taught relegated the sensational to the sidelines and was reluctant to give a simple accounting of events, but strived on the contrary to pose and solve problems and, neglecting surface disturbances, to observe the long and medium-term evolution of economy, society and civilisation.

Aimoin, who died about 1010, must be distinguished from Aimoin, a monk of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, who wrote De miraculis sancti Germani, and a fragment De Normanorum gestis circa Parisiacam urbem et de divine in eos ultione tempore Caroli calvi.

However, details of these beliefs can be found in almost everything he wrote, from his early Summa de bono to his last work, the Summa theologiae.

He wrote, apparently about the year 1143, a chronicle entitled Annales sive Historia de gestis regum Britanniae, which begins with Brutus and carries the history of England down to 1129.

In 825 Al-Khwārizmī wrote a treatise in Arabic, On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals, which was translated into Latin from Arabic in the 12th century as Algoritmi de numero Indorum.

In the 15th century, Leonor López de Córdoba, a Spanish noblewoman, wrote her Memorias, which may be the first autobiography in Castillian.

One early example is that of Leonor López de Córdoba ( 1362 – 1420 ) who wrote what is supposed to be the first autobiography in Spanish.

Pascal was an important mathematician, helping create two major new areas of research: he wrote a significant treatise on the subject of projective geometry at the age of sixteen, and later corresponded with Pierre de Fermat on probability theory, strongly influencing the development of modern economics and social science.

Simone de Beauvoir wrote in 1949 that Épître au Dieu d ' Amour was " the first time we see a woman take up her pen in defense of her sex " making Christine de Pizan perhaps the West's first feminist, or protofeminist as some scholars prefer to say.

According to one authority ( a legend on the 1489 map of Henricus Martellus Germanus ), Cão died off Cape Cross ; but João de Barros and others wrote of his return to the Congo, and subsequent taking of a native envoy to Portugal.
