Santiago, rather than listening to popular radio, borrowed rock and roll records from the public library as he was growing up ; he first discovered Les Paul and Jimi Hendrix, who led to jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery.

The band's performance ended with Hendrix famously setting his psychedelically painted Fender Stratocaster on fire.

The preeminent electric guitar player to use the pedal in this way was Jimi Hendrix who revolutionized the way it was applied using the combination of Fender Stratocaster with stacked Marshall Amplifiers ( in both static and modulated mode ) for lead / rhythm guitar applications unheard of prior to Hendrix.

After an extensive tour of the United States opening for Jimi Hendrix, a weary Ayers sold his white Fender Jazz bass to Noel Redding and retreated to the beaches of Ibiza in Spain with Daevid Allen to recuperate.

Prior to Jimi Hendrix, many guitarists used the Fender or Bigsby vibrato to approximate the pedal steel or slide guitar tones found in Hawaiian or Country music.

Watson, a recognized master of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, has been compared to Jimi Hendrix and allegedly became irritated when asked about this comparison, supposedly stating: " I used to play the guitar standing on my hands.

Scarlet was replaced with Randy Coven in 1993 and in 1994 there was a Mountain lineup that included West, Laing, Noel Redding ( ex-Jimi Hendrix Experience ) and special guest guitarist Elvin Bishop.
