The first town council election took place on 4 January 1861 and William Henry Groom won.

She was the wife of firstly Henry Murray, Groom of the Bedchamber to Charles I, and secondly of Sir John Baber.

He was Groom of the Chamber to Henry VII, as early as 1502.

A Corrody, no doubt the same one, was held in this Priory in 1509 by Hugh Denys of Osterley ( d. 1511 ), Groom of the King's Close Stool to Henry VII .. On the death of Denys, Henry VIII transferred the Corrody (" in the King's gift by death of Hugh Denys ") to John Porth, another courtier.

Hugh Denys was Groom of the Stool to King Henry VII, an important figure in the management of the royal and national finances.
