Among his childhood friends was his cousin Henry of Almain, son of King Henry's brother Richard of Cornwall.

Henry of Almain would remain a close companion of the prince, both through the civil war that followed, and later during the crusade.

Edward took the crusader's cross in an elaborate ceremony on 24 June 1268, with his brother Edmund and cousin Henry of Almain.

Isabel and Richard had four children, of whom only their son, Henry of Almain, survived to adulthood.

He was buried next to his second wife Sanchia of Provence and Henry of Almain, his son by his first wife, at Hailes Abbey, which he had founded.

Here the sons of Simon de Montfort stabbed to death Henry of Almain, son of Richard of Cornwall.

They found fortune in the service of Charles of Anjou, and later avenged the father and brother's deaths by killing Henry of Almain, the nephew of the King, and their own cousin.

Henry of Almain ( 2 November 1235 – 13 March 1271 ), so called because of his father's German connections as King of the Romans ( Almain is derived from Allemagne, the French word for Germany ), was the son of Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall and Isabel Marshal.
