The Mullanes formed in Melbourne in early 1985 with Finn, Hester, Seymour and guitarist Craig Hooper ( ex-The Reels ) and first performed on 11 June.

Finn and Hester performed " Not the Girl You Think You Are " with Largest Living Things, before being joined by Seymour for " Sister Madly " and a version of Paul Kelly's " Leaps and Bounds ", which also featured Kelly on vocals.

Other songs performed by Amos include The Doors ' " People are Strange ", Depeche Mode's " Personal Jesus ", Joni Mitchell's " The Circle Game ", Madonna's " Live to Tell " and " Like a Prayer ", Björk's " Hyperballad ", Led Zeppelin's " When the Levee Breaks " ( which she debuted in Austin, Texas, just after the events of Hurricane Katrina ), Kate Bush's " And Dream of Sheep " and Crowded House's " Don't Dream It's Over ", dedicating it to drummer Paul Hester who had died a week before.

In 1986 Finn performed with The Rock Party a charity project initiated by The National Campaign Against Drug Abuse ( NCADA ), which included many Australasian musicians such as Reg Mombassa from Mental As Anything, Eddie Rayner, Tim Finn, Nick Seymour and Paul Hester of Crowded House, Geoff Stapleton, Mark Callaghan and Robbie James of GANGgajang, Mary Azzopardi of Rockmelons, Andrew Barnum of The Vitabeats, Lissa Barnum, Michael Barclay, Peter Blakely, Deborah Conway, Jenny Morris, Danny De Costa, Greg Herbert ( The Promise ), Spencer P Jones, Sean Kelly ( Models ), John Kennedy, Paul Kelly, Martin Plaza ( Mental as Anything ), Robert Susz ( Dynamic Hepnotics ) and Rick Swinn ( The Venetians ).

On December 20, 2010, Hester set an NFL record for most touchdowns on a punt or kickoff return with his 14th career return coming against the Minnesota Vikings.

Finn and Hester decided to form a new band during the Split Enz farewell tour, Enz with a Bang, during November and December 1984.

Following the recording sessions with Tim, Neil began writing and recording a third Crowded House album with Hester and Seymour, but these tracks were rejected by the record company, so Neil asked Tim if Crowded House could use the Finn songs.

In January 2007, it was announced that Crowded House were reforming with Neil, Nick Seymour, Mark Hart and new drummer Matt Sherrod ( following the suicide of Paul Hester in 2005 ).

Hester was living with Deborah Conway of Do-Ré-Mi during the early 1980s, while also playing regularly in Love Party.

Hester later worked with Conway in Rose Amongst Thorns ( 1990 – 1991 ) and Ultrasound ( 1995 ).

Crowded House were mid way through a US tour when Paul Hester quit the band on 15 April 1994.

In 2006, following the death of Hester, Finn reformed Crowded House ( adding Beck's former drummer Matt Sherrod ) and released their first studio album in over 13 years, Time on Earth, and the band began a world tour.

Paul Newell Hester ( 8 January 1959 – 26 March 2005 ) was an Australian musician and television personality ; he was the drummer for the related bands Split Enz and Crowded House.

Other records by Crowded House with Hester are: Temple of Low Men ( 1988 ), Woodface ( 1991 ), Together Alone ( 1993 ), and the Best-of collection Recurring Dream ( 1996 ).

Hester remained with Crowded House until 1994, when the pressure of touring and the birth of his first daughter made him want to stay home, rather than remain on the road.

After leaving Crowded House, Paul Hester appeared on many TV and radio shows in Australia and opened a cafe / restaurant named Beach House Cafe with fellow Melbourne musician Joe Camilleri in Elwood Beach in Melbourne.

Hester later became involved in a new band called Largest Living Things ( 1997 – 2000 ), with Kevin Garant on guitar and Barry Stockley on bass, performing with members of rock groups Crowded House, Split Enz, Midnight Oil, and others.

Largest Living Things released a few EPs in Australia featuring songs written and sung by Hester ; in contrast to his previous work in Crowded House, Hester played guitar as well as drums.

Hester formed Tarmac Adam with Crowded House's Nick Seymour and Matt O ' Donnell, Sean McVitty and Steve Paix in 2001.

This show gave Hester the room to explore his humorous presenter skills, showcase some friends, reunite with friends from Crowded House, and play with the house band and his own band, Largest Living Things, with Hester now performing from behind the drums instead of guitar.
