The SiPo was placed under the direct command of Reinhard Heydrich who was already chief of the Nazi Party's intelligence service, the Sicherheitsdienst ( SD ).

In June 1942, Heydrich was assassinated in Prague in an operation led by Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, members of Czechoslovakia's army-in-exile who had been trained by the British Special Operations Executive.

Heydrich was attacked in Prague on 27 May 1942 by a British-trained team of Czech and Slovak soldiers who had been sent by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile to kill him in an operation code named Operation Anthropoid.

Acting on the advice of his associate Karl von Eberstein, who was von Osten's friend, Himmler interviewed Heydrich.

At Hitler's direction, Heydrich, Himmler, Göring, and Viktor Lutze drew up lists of those who should be liquidated, starting with seven top SA officials and including many more.

To realise his goals Heydrich demanded racial classification of those who could and could not be Germanized.

On April 20, 1934, ( as a prelude to the Night of the Long Knives ), Göring transferred the Gestapo to Himmler, who was also named chief of all German police forces outside Prussia ; two days later Himmler named Heydrich the head of the Gestapo.

In the meantime, Reinhard Heydrich, previously a naval cadet who had served under Canaris and was at the time the Sicherheitsdienst ( SD ) leader, despite being his protégé, friend and neighbour, became his rival.

Presumably, the Canaris posting in Abwehr had the secret approval of the dynamic Heydrich, who preferred him to his predecessor, Commander Pfatz, who was not in line with the Nazi party members.

The guidelines for such massacres were formulated by Reinhard Heydrich, who ordered his officers to induce anti-Jewish incidents on territories newly occupied by the German forces.

Instead of Lange, Heydrich could have invited either Karl Jäger or Erich Ehrlinger, who commanded the SiPO and SD in Lithuania and Belarus respectively, and were responsible for similar massacres.

From 1939 to 1942 he was Heinrich Himmler's personal aide and a deputy chief in the Reich Main Security Office under Heydrich who answered only to Himmler.

During the Second World War from 1940 to 1945 Addington House was the residence of the Cigna, Moravec, Strankmuller and Tauer families of the Czechoslovak Military Intelligence staff under Colonel František Moravec, who planned the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.

Eicke's reorganizations and the introduction of forced labour made the camps one of the SS's most powerful tools ; this earned him the enmity of Reinhard Heydrich, who had already unsuccessfully attempted to take control of the Dachau concentration camp in his position as chief of the SD.

The Einsatzgruppen ( SS task forces ) had been originally formed by Heydrich to secure government papers and offices in areas taken over by Germany before World War II.

Authorised by Hitler and under the direction of Himmler and Heydrich, the Einsatzgruppen units — now repurposed as death squads — followed the Heer ( army ) into Poland, and by the end of 1939 they had murdered some 65, 000 intellectuals and other civilians.

The Reich Protector, Konstantin von Neurath, remained the territory's titular head, but was sent on " leave " because Hitler, Himmler, and Heydrich felt his " soft approach " to the Czechs had promoted anti-German sentiment and encouraged anti-German resistance via strikes and sabotage.

His service record also gives him credit as a Navy Reserve Lieutenant, although during World War II Heydrich had no contact whatsoever with this military branch.

German documents suggest that Hitler intended to transfer Heydrich to German-occupied France, where the French resistance had started to gain ground.

All but four of the women from Lidice were deported immediately to Ravensbrück concentration camp ( four were pregnant – they were forcibly aborted at the same hospital where Heydrich had died and then sent to the concentration camp ).
