Notable winners of Grand-Prix Hassan II are: Thomas Muster in 1990, Hicham Arazi in 1997, Younes El Aynaoui in 2002 and Stanislas Wawrinka in 2010.

It is one of the IAAF's foremost indoor track and field events and two-time Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj set a world record at the event in 1997.

Currently, the mile record is held by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj, who ran a time of 3: 43. 13 in Rome in 1999.

In recent years, races over this distance have become more of a prolonged sprint, with each lap averaging 55 seconds for the world record performance by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1998 at Rome ( two 1: 50 s 800 m performances back to back ).

From the 1990s onwards, North Africans such as Noureddine Morceli of Algeria and Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco came to dominate the 1500 and mile events.

Hicham El Guerrouj ( Moroccan Arabic: هشام الݣروج, Berber: Hicam El Gerruj, ⵀⵉⵛⴰⵎ ⴻⵍ ⴳⴻⵔⵔⵓⵊ ) is a Moroccan former middle distance runner, born September 14, 1974 in Berkan, Morocco.

Hicham El Guerrouj's first international triumph was in 1992 at age 18, when he was 3rd in the 5000 metres of the 1992 Junior World Championships in Seoul, behind Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia.

Hicham El Guerrouj is today an Ambassador for Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based international organization, as well as a member of its " Champions for Peace " club, a group of 54 famous elite athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport.

Salazar was primarily responsible for guiding Armstrong for the first of the race, while Joan Benoit Samuelson oversaw the next, and Hicham El Guerrouj the final.

In Rome, 1999 Hicham El Guerrouj ran a time of 3: 43. 13 and Noah Ngeny finished at 3: 43. 40.

Although Cacho was the defending Olympic 1500 m champion, the final in Atlanta was considered to be a match race between Morceli and Hicham El Guerrouj, who had filled the first two places at the previous year's World Championships.

Ngeny stayed close to Hicham El Guerrouj down the stretch to finish at 3: 43. 40, still the second fastest mile ever run, and almost a full second inside the old WR ( 3: 44. 39 ) of Noureddine Morceli.

He also won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Gothenburg, finishing behind Noureddine Morceli and Hicham El Guerrouj.

He also is the sixth fastest miler ever, putting him behind only Hicham El Guerrouj, Noah Ngeny, Noureddine Morceli, Steve Cram and Daniel Komen.

Hicham El Guerrouj is the current men's record holder with his time of 3: 43. 13, while Svetlana Masterkova has the women's record of 4: 12. 56.

By the end of the 20th century, the record had been lowered to 3: 43. 13, by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1999.

Using team tactics, Lagat and Kenyan team mate Noah Ngeny kept heavy favorite Hicham El Guerrouj from winning gold.

The next summer, Lagat won the silver medal, behind El Guerrouj, at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics, and later that summer, at a meeting in Brussels Lagat set the Kenyan National Record and became the second fastest individual ever at 1500m when he ran 3: 26. 34, finishing second in this race behind Hicham El Guerrouj ( 3: 26. 13 ), in what was a failed attempt to break El Guerrouj's own world record of 3: 26. 00.

The coffin of King Hassan II, carried by King Mohamed VI, his brother Prince Moulay Rachid and his cousin Moulay Hicham, was covered with a green fabric, in which the first prayer of Islam, " There is no god but Allah ", is inscribed in golden letters.

Among his movies, he was particularly noticed in Grande École ( 2004 ), playing Mécir, and in his role as Hicham in Le Clan, released as Three Dancing Slaves in the USA, also in 2004.

Hicham was born in Tetuan, Morocco in 1977.

However, the most influential person in the academic musical sphere was doubtlessly P. Mohamed Belkhayat, a Moroccan composer and oud teacher, who influenced Hicham during his intensive weekly private lessons.

Hicham was instructed in Arabic maqams ( scales ) and also in the very specific beauty of Moroccan classical music, quite different from Middle Eastern or Persian Music.

Along with Hicham ’ s regular participation with the Oriental Music Orchestra of the Conservatory, he was an active member of the Quintet of Arabic Music, under the auspices of the Moroccan Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and Trio Shahnaz.

Chicago magazine named Hicham “ Best Exotic Instrumentalist ” for 2002 ; he was featured in an Al Jadid article ; and he made his first studio recording with percussionist Catherine Alexander, “ Promises: Oriental Classical Music .”

Hicham and Rich performed for the Seattle Arab Festival ; Mosaic was part of the City of Chicago ’ s “ Miles of Music ” festival, and Hicham ’ s new Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble performed at the Oriental Institute for their inaugural concert.

Hicham was filmed for “ New Morning ” segment on the Hallmark Channel.

He finished the London Marathon in a time of 2: 08: 45 – the third fastest run of his career at that point – but this was only enough for eighth in a fast race which saw him beaten by compatriot Hicham Chatt.

El Guerrouj rose to international prominence in the mid-1990s with near-record times in the 1500 metres and mile.

El Guerrouj competed in his first Olympic Games in 1996 at Atlanta.

One month later, at the Grand Prix final in Milan, El Guerrouj became the first runner to defeat Morceli over 1500 m in four years.

In the following years, El Guerrouj became the only middle distance runner to win four consecutive world titles in 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003

El Guerrouj set two world indoor records at the start of the 1997 season, starting with a 1500 m record of 3: 31. 18 at the Sparkassen Cup and setting a new indoor best of 3: 48. 45 in the mile run at the Indoor Flanders meeting a few weeks later.

In 1998 in Rome, El Guerrouj broke Morceli's 1500 m world record ( 3: 27. 37 ) with a time of 3: 26. 00.

In 1999, also in Rome, El Guerrouj broke the world record in the mile set by Noureddine Morceli in 1993, with a time of 3: 43. 13.

At the Sydney Olympics, El Guerrouj, finished second in the 1500 metres, behind Noah Ngeny, a Kenyan runner who ran as El Guerrouj's pacemaker when El Guerrouj ran his 1500 m world record in Rome in 1998.
