Willacy County was formed in 1911 from parts of Cameron and Hidalgo counties and originally included what is now Kenedy County ; it was named for state senator John G. Willacy.

Located in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, Hidalgo County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States, and is the seventh most-populous county in Texas.
