Hippies rejected established institutions, criticized middle class values, opposed nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War, embraced aspects of Eastern philosophy, championed sexual liberation, were often vegetarian and eco-friendly, promoted the use of psychedelic drugs which they believed expanded one's consciousness, and created intentional communities or communes.

Hippies were often pacifists, and participated in non-violent political demonstrations, such as civil rights marches, the marches on Washington D. C., and anti – Vietnam War demonstrations, including draft-card burnings and the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests.

Hippies also inspired the decline in popularity of the necktie and other business clothing, which had been unavoidable for men during the 1950s and early 1960s.

Hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public, becoming known as flower children.

Joseph Byrd ( born December 19, 1937, Louisville, Kentucky, United States ) and raised in Tucson, Arizona, was the leader of The United States of America, a notable rock band from the 1960s, as well as the psychedelic group Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies, of cult fame through their release The American Metaphysical Circus.

Hippies were also vilified and sometimes attacked by punks, revivalist mods, greasers, football casuals, Teddy boys, rednecks and members of other youth subcultures of the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1992, The Hothouse Flowers joined Def Leppard — the combined group going by the name The Acoustic Hippies From Hell — to record three songs (" From the Inside ", a cover of the Rolling Stones ' " You Can't Always Get What You Want ", and a cover of Jimi Hendrix's " Little Wing ") that were included as B-sides on Def Leppard's single " Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad ", from their album Adrenalize.
