The very first race organised by Siân o ' r Siop saw Guto taking on an unbeaten English Captain over a distance of 4 miles on Hirwaun Common.

According to the 2001 census, Hirwaun has a population of 4, 851 people.

Heading north to Abercynon, the road now follows the route of the Taff Vale Railways Llancaiach Branch to Quakers Yard roundabout, where it is joined by the A4059 from Abercynon, Aberdare and Hirwaun ; the A472 from Ystrad Mynach and Pontypool finally the A4054 from Quakers Yard, and Merthyr Tydfil.

It starts again at Hereford, crosses the Wales-England border over the River Monnow, continues south to Abergavenny and Brynmawr, then continues west along the heads of the valleys, past Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Rhymney, Merthyr Tydfil and Hirwaun and Glynneath.

It links with the A4059 from Abercynon, Aberdare and Hirwaun ; the A472 from Ystrad Mynach and Pontypool, and the A4054 from Quakers Yard.

The constituency encompasses the towns of Aberdare, Mountain Ash, Cilfynydd, Abercynon and Hirwaun.

Since its termination at Aberdare following the Beeching Axe, there have been various proposals to extend the line northwards towards Hirwaun again.

From the northern terminus, a tramway connected the canal to iron works at Aberdare and Hirwaun.

The village of Hirwaun is from the town of Aberdare, and comes under Aberdare for postal reasons.

The Lamb FC, Glancynon FC, PT Civils and Hirwaun & Mackworth seconds play in the Heatwise Aberdare Valley Football League.

In 1994, the possibility was raised of upgrading the whole of the A465 to 2-lane dual carriageway standard with grade-separated junctions ( and extra climbing lanes on certain hills ) between Abergavenny and Hirwaun, a stretch connecting the existing A465 dual-carriageway link to Swansea and the M4 motorway to the A40 which is an important part of the link to the M50 motorway and much of England.

Andrews, née Smith, was born into a mining family at Hirwaun in the Cynon Valley, one of eleven children ( two of whom died during childhood ).

Hirwaun ( Welsh " Long Meadow ") is the name of a village at the northwest end of the Cynon Valley in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales.

The remaining sections from Dowlais Top to the A470, and from the A470 to Hirwaun were to be completed by 2020.

Because of the geography and topography of the area the village of Ystradfellte is not visible from the nearest main road, the A4059 Hirwaun to A470 stretch.

There are a few gaps in the half-hourly service to enable coal / stone trains to run to / from Tower Colliery / Hirwaun.

In November 2009, WAG sponsored Network Rail in a feasibility study to reopening both the section to Hirwaun, and parts of the former Anglesey Central Railway between Llangefni on Anglesey, and Bangor.

The ascent from Yorkshire Bridge is a steep climb of 300m in 3 / 4 mile by Parkin Clough, first through woods then over the moor to the top.

Situated 10 miles north of Gilsland and 13 miles west of Bellingham, the former grouse moor is now part of the Wark forest but there are areas still not covered by conifers where grouse can be found.

The 1842 Leeds Directory description of Keighley reads " Its parish had no dependent townships though it is about six miles ( 10 km ) long and four broad, and comprises of land ( including a peaty moor of about ) and a population which amounted, in the year 1801, to 5, 745.

Moray drew up his army on the moor close to the village of Langside, then several miles south of Glasgow but now well within the city.

It is located on an ancient road across the moor, about 2 miles ( 3 km ) north east of the village of Postbridge and has been a stopping point for travellers since the middle of the 18th century.

Allow for about 15 miles per day on the trail – though well-marked and mostly maintained, the going can be slow over the moor.

Attractions include a 27-hole golf links, and Roundstone Bog three miles to the east, an expanse of moor, lake and stream, containing wildlife and rare plants.
