Greene County is the home of the oldest college in Tennessee ( Tusculum College ), Tennessee's oldest Methodist congregation ( the Ebenezer Methodist Church, near Chuckey ), and Tennessee's second oldest continuously cultivated farm ( Elmwood Farm, part of the Earnest Farms Historic District ).

The Newville Cemetery was listed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register in 2005.

Near that same site sits the second oldest private cemetery in the county, the Historic Yorba Cemetery.

Mansfield Center Cemetery, which contains many 18th-century gravestones, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a fine example of the rich artistic tradition of funerary stone carving in colonial New England.

The Spring Garden home, where the author lived in 1843 – 1844, is today preserved by the National Park Service as the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site | Cedar Hill, Douglass ' house in the Anacostia Historic District | Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D. C., is preserved as a List of areas in the United States National Park System # National historic sites | National Historic Site.

Though Farmer died in 1839, his efforts led to the creation of the New England Historic Genealogical Society ( NEHGS ), one of New England's oldest and most prominent organizations dedicated to the preservation of public records.
