Historical materialism is a methodological approach to the study of society, economics, and history, first articulated by Karl Marx ( 1818 – 1883 ) as " the materialist conception of history ".

Historical materialism looks for the causes of developments and changes in human society in the means by which humans collectively produce the necessities of life.

Historical materialism can be seen to rest on the following principles:

Historical materialism uses " materialism " to make two separate points, where the truth or falsehood of one point does not affect the others.

Historical materialism builds upon the idea that became current in philosophy from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries that the development of human society has moved through a series of stages, from hunting and gathering, through pastoralism and cultivation, to commercial society.
