Elihu Root and George Frisbie Hoar were prominent figures in the campaign to maintain the state legislative selection of senators.

Roger Sherman Hoar ( April 8, 1887-October 10, 1963 ) was a state senator and assistant Attorney General, state of Massachusetts.

Reformers included William Jennings Bryan, while opponents counted respected figures such as Elihu Root and George Frisbie Hoar amongst their number ; Root cared so strongly about the issue that, after the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment, he refused to stand for re-election to the Senate.

Hoar is currently on the Board of Directors for the Middle East Policy Council, a Washington D. C. based non-profit organization that seeks to educate American citizens and policy makers about the political, economic and security issues impacting U. S. national interests in the Middle East

By the late 1860s Bodley had become disenchanted with Morris, and for stained glass turned to the firm of Burlison and Grylls, founded in 1868, for the glass in his later churches, notably St Augustine's Church, Pendlebury, near Manchester ( designed 1870 ) and the Church of the Holy Angels, Hoar Cross, Staffordshire ( designed 1871 – 72 ).

He brought a letter, dated 5 February 1672, addressed to the magistrates and ministers in Massachusetts Bay by thirteen nonconformist ministers in and around London, friends of the colony and agents in raising funds for a new college building, who strongly recommended Hoar for the post of president of Harvard as successor to Charles Chauncy, who died 19 February 1672.

Hoar had high ambitions for Harvard as research centre, as he wrote to Robert Boyle at this time.

As Hoar grew up he was known for quick thinking and witty sayings.

Hoar was Grant's principle legal and political advisor, since Grant had never held public elected office until his election to the presidency.

Leonard Hoar became President of Harvard in 1672, but was disliked by many, including some of the governors, among them Oakes.
