Hobbits are a fictional diminutive humanoid race who inhabit the lands of Middle-earth in J. R. R. Tolkien's fiction.

According to the author in the prologue to The Lord of the Rings, Hobbits are " relatives " of the race of Men.

In the prologue to The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien writes that Hobbits are between two and four feet ( 0. 61 – 1. 22 m ) tall, the average height being three feet six inches ( 1. 07 m ).

Their feet are covered with curly hair ( usually brown, as was the hair on their heads ) with leathery soles, so most Hobbits hardly ever wear shoes.

Two Hobbits, Bilbo Baggins and the Old Took, are known to have lived to the age of 130 or beyond, although the race's average life expectancy is 100 years.

Hobbits are considered to " come of age " on their 33rd birthday, so a 50-year-old Hobbit would be regarded as entering middle-age.

Hobbits are not quite as stocky as the similarly-sized dwarves, but still tend to be stout, with slightly pointed ears.

Hobbits and derivative Halflings are often depicted with unusually large feet for their size, perhaps to visually emphasize their unusualness.

Historically, the Hobbits are known to have originated in the Valley of Anduin, between Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains.

The Harfoots, the most numerous, were almost identical to the Hobbits as they are described in The Hobbit.

However, they are sometimes spoken of in the present tense, and the prologue " Concerning Hobbits " in The Lord of the Rings states that they have survived into Tolkien's day.

In Magic the Gathering, Kithkin serve the same role as Hobbits, and share many of the same characteristics, such as size, groupings and alignment, but are more militarily capable.

Hobbits are also featured in Leonard Nimoy's " Ballad of Bilbo Baggins ".

They are distinct from the various humanoid races, though some, like Hobbits, are human in origin, and others are thought by some characters to be human, such as the Wizards ( who are really of another race ).

There are three major strains of Hobbits: Fallohides, taller, slimmer, fairer, and more uncommon than their fellows, they often have more facility with language, song, and craft, and have an unusual adventurous streak.

By special permission of the Valar, the Hobbits Frodo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins were also permitted to go to Valinor.

The 1981 BBC The Lord of the Rings radio play has " The Scouring of the Shire " story included along with the Shire homeland taken over by ruffians, like the book Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin does rally up the Hobbits to fight against the ruffians in which the Hobbits won The Battle of Bywater and includes the original showdown and ending of Saruman who dies by Wormtongues knife and Wormtongue who gets killed by arrows in the Shire, also it tells about the murder of Lotho and Lobelia who gives Frodo and Sam back his home and money to help out the Hobbits and she later dies of old age.

It is bordered in the east by the Barrow-downs, and in the west by the High Hay ( also known as the Hedge ), a large hedge which the Hobbits of Buckland cultivated after they cut the forest to make room for their new homes.

Thorin also did not think highly of Hobbits, and putting Bilbo in the expedition might prevent the proud Thorin from rash actions — such as openly challenging Smaug.

However, within the story, Hobbits considered themselves a separate people.

At the time of the events in The Lord of the Rings, Hobbits lived in the Shire and in Bree in the north west of Middle-earth, though by the end, some had moved out to the Tower Hills and to Gondor and Rohan.

" Tolkien wrote to W. H. Auden that The Marvellous Land of Snergs " was probably an unconscious source-book for the Hobbits " and he told an interviewer that the word hobbit " might have been associated with Sinclair Lewis's Babbitt " ( like hobbits, George Babbitt enjoys the comforts of his home ).
