The first national association was the Irish Ladies Hockey Union in 1894, and though rebuffed by the Hockey Association, women's field hockey grew rapidly around the world.

The first hockey club, McGill University Hockey Club, was founded in 1877 followed by the Montreal Victorias, organized in 1881.

In Europe, it is believed that in 1885 the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club was formed to play the first Ice Hockey Varsity Match against traditional rival Cambridge in St. Moritz, Switzerland, although this is undocumented.

The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, which later became more famously known as the Stanley Cup, was first awarded in 1893 to the Montreal HC, champions of the AHAC.

Stanley's son Arthur helped organize the Ontario Hockey Association and Stanley's daughter Isobel was one of the first women to play ice hockey.

The Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace was founded in 1908 to govern international competitions, and the first European championships were won by Great Britain in 1910.

By 1902, the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League was the first to openly employ professionals.

The league joined with teams in Michigan and Ontario to form the first fully professional International Professional Hockey League ( IPHL ), in 1904.

In 2013 Luanda together with Namibe city, will host the 2013 FIRS Men's Roller Hockey World Cup, the first time that a World Cup of roller hockey is held in Africa.

* 1917 – The National Hockey League is formed, with the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, and Toronto Arenas as its first teams.

* July 15 – The Scott Morrison Award of Minor Hockey Excellence was first given out to recipient Gordie Howe

* March 22 – Hockey Night in Canada is first broadcast on the Toronto Star's private station CFCA, making the first hockey broadcast ever.

Dubček was forced to resign as first secretary in April 1969 following the Czechoslovak Hockey Riots.

His father, Robert Victor Britten, was a dentist, and his mother Edith Rhoda Hockey, a talented amateur musician who gave Britten his first lessons in piano and notation.

George Sullivan was the head coach for the club's first two seasons until he was replaced by Hockey Hall of Famer Red Kelly.

Stanley was first exposed to the game at Montreal's 1889 Winter Carnival, where he saw the Montreal Victorias play the Montreal Hockey Club.

Sweetland and Ross first presented the trophy in 1893 to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association on behalf of the affiliated Montreal Hockey Club, the champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada ( AHAC ), since they " defeated all comers during the late season, including the champions of the Ontario Association " ( Ottawa ).

On March 17, in the first ever Stanley Cup playoff game, the Montreal Hockey Club ( Montreal HC ) defeated the Montreal Victorias, 3 – 2.

Five days later, in the first Stanley Cup Final game, Montreal HC beat the Ottawa Hockey Club, 3 – 1.

She appeared in " Playing Till It Hurts " where she attended a Rock Hockey Game where Red was supposed to play in until she injured herself and took the place of one of the teammates.

* Ron MacLean-the host of Hockey Night in Canada has appeared on Air Farce in several sketches, most notably one in which he portrays himself alongside Goy ( as the Queen who is impersonating Don Cherry ).

He appeared in six National Hockey League All-Star Games.

During his bantam year Joe appeared in six games for the Junior B St. Thomas Stars of the Ontario Hockey Association ( OHA ), scoring 8 points in six games as a 14 year old.

Wade also appeared in Road Hockey Rumble in his hometown.

He first appeared in the episode " Ice Hockey ".

Hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky also appeared as a special guest, helping to raise the Canadian flag.

After one season playing with the Medicine Hat Midget Tigers of the Alberta Midget Hockey League ( AMHL ), Linden joined the WHL Tigers for the final five games of the 1985 – 86 regular season, where he scored two goals ; he also appeared in six playoff games, scoring one goal.

At the junior level, he appeared in one World U17 Hockey Challenge ( where he won silver ), two European Junior and three World Junior Championships.

Hockey regularly appeared on the Seven Network's morning program Sunrise in the ' Big Guns of Politics ' section debating Opposition Leader, Kevin Rudd until the arrangement was mutually terminated on 16 April 2007, following controversy over plans to stage a pre-dawn Anzac Day service in Vietnam.

In February 2010, Hockey appeared on the television program Talkin ' ' Bout Your Generation where he was involved in a segment that required him to hold up a tutu and wave a magic wand which attracted criticism from Treasurer Wayne Swan.

Fleury finished the QMJHL season with Cape Breton in a first round elimination and was subsequently assigned to Pittsburgh's American Hockey League ( AHL ) affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins and appeared in 2 post-season games.

He was selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers first overall at the Western Hockey League's ( WHL ) 1998 Bantam Draft, and appeared in eight games with the Tigers in the 1998 – 99 WHL season.

As the story continued well into the next season, Pat Quinn appeared in a segment on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ( CBC )' s Hockey Night in Canada with host Ron MacLean on March 27, 1995, publicly denying the claims.

Turco also appeared in two commercials for the National Hockey League.

A billboard advertisement for a fictional ' Eastern Hockey League ' appeared in the movie Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

Additionally, McDonald appeared in six Western Canada Hockey League ( WCHL ) games with the Calgary Centennials.

He joined the senior team again for the 1990 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, but appeared in only one game after suffering a knee injury.

He appeared in 59 games, scoring 20 goals and 48 points with the Pat Blues, and appeared in two Western Hockey League ( WHL ) games with the Regina Pats.

Following the season, Conroy was named to play with Team USA at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, but appeared in only two games for the team.

During the deciding Game 5 of the 2011 National League Division Series, Lauren Hart ( the daughter of Hockey Hall of Fame broadcaster Gene Hart ) appeared at Citizens Bank Park to sing God Bless America during the seventh-inning stretch as she had become a fixture at Philadelphia Flyers games singing that song in duet with Kate Smith as the Flyers ' good-luck charm before important games, with the hope that Hart would also bring that luck to the Philadelphia Phillies as well.
