Part of Hoddesdon was created an urban district by the Local Government Act 1894, the remainder becoming the parish of Hoddesdon Rural in the Ware Rural District.

Hoddesdon was situated about north of London on the main road to Cambridge and to northern towns and cities.

This was subsequently rebuilt and enlarged and in 1844 become the parish church when Hoddesdon was created a separate ecclesiastical parish.

Trade in Hoddesdon was centred on the hops market each Thursday.

The Wednesday market has survived in Hoddesdon and was joined in the late 20th century by a Friday market.

The river flows through ( or by ) Luton, Harpenden, Welwyn Garden City, to Hertford where it changes from a small shallow river to a deep canal at Hertford Castle Weir, which then flows on to Ware, Stanstead Abbotts, Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Waltham Abbey, Enfield Lock, Ponders End, Edmonton, Tottenham, Upper Clapton, Hackney Wick, Stratford, Bromley-by-Bow ( past Fish Island ), Canning Town and finally Leamouth where it meets the River Thames ( as Bow Creek ).

It is situated on an extensive site in a residential area of Hoddesdon, surrounded by mature woodland.

There were further improvements throughout the 19th century, including an Act in 1850 to authorise new lock cuts at Hoddesdon, Carthagena Lock ( Broxbourne ), Waltham Marsh, Tottenham, Walthamstow, Hackney, Leyton and Bromley-by-Bow and new locks at Hunter's Gate ( Bow Bridge ) and Old Ford.

Arthur Balfour had his early education at the Grange preparatory school in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire ( 1859 – 1861 ), and Eton ( 1861 – 1866 ), where he studied with the influential Master William Johnson Cory.

In 1894, the Local Government Act 1894 created the Staines Urban District of Middlesex.

In 1965, under the London Government Act 1963, most of the rest of Middlesex became part of Greater London while Staines Urban District was transferred to Surrey.

In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, the Staines Urban District was abolished and its area combined with that of the former Sunbury-on-Thames Urban District to form the present-day borough of Spelthorne.

Biggin Hill was an ancient parish county of Kent, in the Diocese of Rochester, and under the Local Government Act 1894 formed part of Bromley Urban District.

From 1894 to 1965 Carshalton formed part of the Carshalton Urban District.

Historically a rural Essex parish, it gained Urban District status in 1894, and between 1938 and 1965 formed the core of the Municipal Borough of Chingford, Chingford now forms part of the north-east London Borough of Waltham Forest.
