Sherlock Holmes, the ancestor of all private eyes, was born during the 1890s.

It was in order to avoid the stuffy routine of middle class life that Holmes became a detective in the first place.

What was only a vague suspicion in the case of Sherlock Holmes now appears as a direct accusation: the private eye is in danger of turning into his opposite.

These were educated men, who, as Mr. Justice Holmes was fond of saying, formed their inductions out of experience under the burden of responsibility.

Moriarty is the criminal genius behind a highly organized and extremely secret criminal force and Holmes will consider it the crowning achievement of his career if only he can defeat Moriarty.

Holmes is also shown falling over the edge with Moriarty rather than simply being assumed to have fallen, being too injured to defeat Moriarty in a straight fight but knowing that Moriarty will go after Watson if he lives.

Once he manages to distract Watson's attention for a few seconds ( making Watson turn to his bookshelf to see if there is enough room to fit some books ), he transforms himself into Sherlock Holmes, much to Watson's great astonishment when he turns back round.

This could, however, make sense on the assumption that Windibank was not only interested in Miss Sutherland's money but also in her person ; that the bogus engagement covered an illicit and effectively incestous which might have been mutual, even if not ; that Miss Sutherland on at least some level knew all along who ' Hosmer Angel ' truly was ; and that Holmes was acting in her best interest in not bringing all this out in the open and avoiding a traumatic and shattering breakup of her family in the glare of sensational publicity.

Holmes asks Alice if he could meet her father, but she says his health worsened after the death of Charles, whom he had known since they were in Victoria.

As a moral skeptic, Holmes stated that if you want to know the real law, and nothing else, you must consider it from the point of view of a " bad man " who cares only of the material consequences of the courts ' decisions, and not from the point of view of a good man, who find his reasons for conduct " in the vaguer sanctions of his conscience.
