Holt also forged a close relationship with U. S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, whom he had first met in Melbourne in 1942.

Holt visited the US in late June 1966, where he gave a speech in Washington in the presence of President Johnson.

It is named for Joseph Holt of Kentucky, who was Postmaster General and Secretary of War under President James Buchanan.

Following the War, Holt spent an increasing amount of time at his plantation Linwood, located southwest of Lexington, where he operated a scientific farm on his, and where, as President of the North Carolina Agricultural Society, Holt was among the first to introduce purebred breeds of livestock to North Carolina.

Holt proclaimed himself an unequivocal supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt ; though, according to William E. Coffey, " most knowledgeable observers ... viewed Holt as politically left of the president.

In 1857, Holt was appointed Commissioner of Patents by President Buchanan, and moved to Washington.

Holt was drawn to politics in the early 1930s and joined the Prahran branch of the United Australia Party ( UAP ) in 1933.

In 1968 the newly commissioned United States Navy Knox class destroyer escort USS Harold E. Holt ( FF-1074 ) was named in his honour.
