John Irving wrote of the book many times in his novel " The Cider House Rules " in which the main character, Homer Wells, reads " David Copperfield " to the other orphans every night before bed.

* In The Simpsons episode Homer Defined, Homer reads a newspaper called USofA Today with the cover story: " America's Favorite Pencil-# 2 is # 1.

Although first reads on previous seasons had not been well received by the production team, " Homer the Heretic " read very well, particularly some of the visuals in the third act such as the house on fire and Homer being rescued by Flanders.

At the Super Bowl, Ned and Homer stage the story of Noah's Ark, where at the end Ned appears and reads a scripture from the Bible.

Homer is amused by Ned's sentimentality and reads the letter to the family at the breakfast table.

It does however catch the attention of Homer, who picks it up and reads it while sitting in a wing chair owned by Archie Bunker, a character from All in the Family.

Homer reads that it was actually his father that betrayed McAllister, and he even attempted to eat him.

Not only did it resemble parts of " Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish ", but Homer ’ s attempts to regain the letter before Burns reads it appear reminiscent of an episode of The Flintstones.

When Marge reads the letter Homer left behind explaining his actions, she is brought to tears.

* In The Simpsons episode " Colonel Homer ", the Springfield Variety headline reads " Hix in Stix Love Chix Lix ".

Aeolus had six sons and six daughters, whom in Homer he wed to one another and the family lived happily together.

Ignoring Homer, later writers envisaged the labyrinth as an edifice rather than a single dancing path to the center and out again, and gave it numberless winding passages and turns that opened into one another, seeming to have neither beginning nor end.

There is disagreement as to the name of Ajax's mother: Homer names Eriopis as the legal wife of Oileus, but scholiasts cite other authors, some of whom agreed with Homer in considering Eriopis ( or Eriope ) the mother of Ajax, but others stated that the mother of Ajax by Oileus was Alcimache, and yet others asserted that Alcimache was simply another name for Eriopis.

In later episodes, Fibber occasionally addresses the mayor as " Homer ", although it is unclear whether this is his actual first name, or just another of the show's random unexplained naming gags, as The Old Timer's calling Fibber " Johnny ".

There is one fragment dealing with the management of a feast, another which denounces the exaggerated importance attached to athletic victories, and several which deny the humanized gods of Homer.

He almost won another pennant as a manager in 1938, as the Pirates led the National League for most of the season before faltering to the Chicago Cubs in the famous " Homer in the Gloamin '" game at Wrigley Field.

Homer spends the following night with newspapers plastered over his bedroom wall, exhausting himself in trying to find a funny headline.

The newspaper headline " Red Sox beat Yanks 5 – 4 on Chapman's Homer ," a possibly intentional pun on the title of John Keats ' poem " On First Looking into Chapman's Homer ", is mentioned in Vladimir Nabokov's novel Pale Fire ( lines 97 – 98 ), where it is misinterpreted by the character Charles Kinbote.
