By 1433, as a result of the defeat of the last countess of Holland in the Hook and Cod Wars, the Duke of Burgundy had assumed control over most of the Dutch-speaking territories and the concept of a nation of Dutch-speaking people was conceived.

A local ferry operated by RET links Hook of Holland with the Maasvlakte part of the Port of Rotterdam.

The Royal Navy is no longer present in Harwich but Harwich International Port at nearby Parkeston continues to offer regular ferry services to the Hook of Holland ( Hoek van Holland ) in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark.

The river is a busy freight transport route, with barges to the city as well as passing through on the way between the industrial regions of Germany and the docks at Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Hook of Holland.

The Nieuwe Waterweg (" New Waterway ") is a ship canal in the Netherlands from het Scheur ( a branch of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta ) west of the town of Maassluis to the North Sea at Hook of Holland: the Maasmond, where the Nieuwe Waterweg connects to the Maasgeul.

Hydraulic engineer Pieter Caland was commissioned to design a canal cutting through the " Hook of Holland ” and to extend the Mouth of Rhine to the sea.

From Hook of Holland it stretches for approximately where the waterway continues as the Nieuwe Maas.

The very first Nieuwe Waterweg — a breach through the dunes at Hook of Holland — was only long, but in around 1877 the channel was made much larger and wider and the current Nieuwe Waterweg was created.

The point where the Nieuwe Waterweg enters into the North Sea, between Hook of Holland on the north bank and the Maasvlakte to the south, is called the Maasmond.

In 1420, during the Hook and Cod wars, Duke John of Bavaria along with his army marched from Gouda in the direction of Leiden in order to conquer the city since Leiden did not pay the new Count of Holland Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, his niece and only daughter of Count William VI of Holland.

The Dutch also purchased land during the 1630s from the Lenape in present-day Gowanus, Red Hook, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Bushwick.

As payment for regaining the territory, the Dutch West India Company conveyed land from the south side of Christina Kill to Bombay Hook, and as far west as Minquas land.

Collectively, the justices composed the county court which governed the county ......." In September 1673, a Dutch council established a court at New Castle with the boundaries defined as north of Steen Kill ( present-day Stoney Creek ) and south to Bomties Hook ( renamed Bombay Hook ).

" It was Hendrik Hudson and his crew aboard the Dutch vessel ' Half Moon " who, in 1609, first spotted land in what is now Monmouth County, most likely off Sandy Hook.

The eastern and western sections of the valley were separated by a hill the Dutch called Kalck Hoek, ( Dutch meaning Chalk Hook ), named for the numerous oyster shell middens left by Native Americans.

Sea captain and explorer Henry Hudson, in search of the mythical Northwest Passage in the service of the Dutch West India Company, anchored along the shores of Sandy Hook Bay in 1609, describing the area " a very good land to fall in with and a pleasant land to see.

The Nassau Inter-County Express system serves Elmont with routes n1 ( Elmont Road / Central Ave .), n2 ( Meacham Ave ./ N Fletcher Ave .), n6 ( Hempstead Turnpike ) & n8 ( Franklin Ave ./ Dutch Broadway / Hook Creek Blvd.

The colonial Dutch Director-General of New Netherland, Peter Stuyvesant, ordered construction of the first wharf on the Manhattan bank of the lower East River sheltered from winds and ice, which was completed late in 1648 and called Schreyers Hook Dock ( near what is now Pearl and Broad Streets ).

The pond, fed by an underground spring, was located in a valley, with Bayard Mount ( at 110 feet the tallest hill in lower Manhattan ) to the northeast and Kalck Hoek ( Dutch for Chalk Hook, named for the numerous oyster shell middens left by the indigenous Native American inhabitants ) to the west.

Bay Ridge was originally known as Yellow Hook for the hue of the yellowish soil observed by the original Dutch settlers.

On the Northern bank of the Nieuwe Waterweg you find Hook of Holland ( in Dutch: Hoek van Holland ).

Regular ferry service from Paulus Hook had begun in the early Dutch colonial period.

The Dutch called the area " Sant Hoek ;" with the English " Hook " deriving from the Dutch " Hoek ," meaning " spit of land ".

The Sproule and Ratzer maps show that Red Hook was a low-lying area full of tidal mill ponds created by the Dutch.

Rapeleye Street in Red Hook commemorates the beginnings of one of New Amsterdam's earliest families, the Rapelje clan, descended from the first European child born in the new Dutch settlement in the New World, Sarah Rapelje.

He ordered attacks on Pavonia and Corlears Hook on February 25, 1643 in a massacre ( 129 Dutch soldiers killed 120 Indians, including women and children ), followed by retaliations resulting in what would become known as Kieft's War ( 1643 – 1645 ).

In the mid 17th century, the Dutch Governor of Malacca wrote to the Dutch East India Company, asking it to send two boats to the Straits of Singapore to " cruise to the south of Singapore Straits under the Hook of Barbukit and in the vicinity of Pedra Branca " to stop Chinese traders from entering Johor River.

Displeased with the reply of the council of twelve, he disassembled the council on February 8, 1643. Kieft then ordered the Dutch West India Company soldiers to attack nearby Indian encampments at Pavonia and Corlears Hook.

The name Hook comes from the Dutch word " hoeck " which translates into " point of land.
