Horatio and surrender
There, he engaged the American defenders with mixed initial results ; then, after the climactic Battles of Saratoga in September and October he was obliged to surrender his forces to the American General Horatio Gates.
In the meantime Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson appeared with his fleet ; he called the cardinal to task for his leniency, and revoked the terms of surrender.
In contrast, the northern army of General Horatio Gates had won a signal victory over John Burgoyne's forces, compelling Burgoyne to surrender his entire army after the Battles of Saratoga.
Active in the New York campaign, Washington sent him to assist Horatio Gates in the Northern Department, where he was wounded in the Battle of Bemis Heights, and was present at Burgoyne's surrender.
Illness kept Huger from capture with the surrender of Charleston, and he later rejoined the Southern army under Major General Horatio Gates in North Carolina.
