Hornsby finished the season with a. 246 average in 57 at-bats while the Cardinals finished in sixth place in the National League ( NL ).

Hornsby finished the season with the first of seven batting titles by hitting. 370, and he also led the league in on-base percentage (. 431 ), slugging percentage (. 559 ), hits ( 218 ), total bases ( 329 ), doubles ( 44 ), and RBIs ( 94 ).

Hornsby finished the year with his second Triple Crown, when he combined a. 403 batting average with 39 home runs and 143 RBIs.

The Cardinals finished in fourth place in 1925, finishing one game over. 500, though the team won 64 games and lost 51 under Hornsby.

He finished first in the National League with a. 401 batting average, the first player to hit over. 400 since Rogers Hornsby in 1925.

In 1917 he batted. 302, led the NL in runs a third time and in walks for the first time, and finished second in the NL in total bases behind Hornsby ; he also appeared in his second World Series, but had another poor performance, hitting. 227 as the Giants again lost.

At only 19 years old, Hornsby was the fourth-youngest player in the NL that year.

Hornsby missed several games late in the year with injuries that the Cardinals ( and Hyland ) did not believe to be serious ; as a result he was fined $ 500 ($ today ) and suspended for the last five games of the year.

During post-season negotiations for a new contract, Hornsby demanded $ 50, 000 per year for three years.

Hornsby played in 44 of the first 48 games, but after a disappointing performance he only played himself about half the time for the rest of the year.

That year, Hornsby began operating a baseball school in Hot Springs, Texas, which he ran on and off between 1933 and 1951 with various associates.

On April 21, in his first game of the year, Hornsby hit the final home run of his career in a 15 – 10 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The next year, in 1951, Hornsby managed the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League.

He had problems off the field as well ; on June 17, Hornsby hit St. Louis citizen Frank G. Rowe with his Buick when Rowe stepped out in front of traffic to cross an intersection.

The beginning of the live-ball era led to a spike in hitting productivity throughout the majors, which helped Hornsby to hit with increased power during the 1921 season.

The Cardinals held a special day in Hornsby's honor on September 30 before a home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they presented Hornsby with multiple awards before the game, including a baseball autographed by President of the United States Warren G. Harding.

While in the training camp of the Millers camp for the springtime, Williams met Rogers Hornsby, who had hit over. 400 three times, including a. 424 average in 1924, who was a coach for the Millers for the spring.

On May 21, Williams passed Chuck Klein for 10th place, on May 25 Williams passed Rogers Hornsby for 9th place, and on July 5 Williams passed Al Simmons for 8th place all-time in career home runs.

He often touted Rogers Hornsby as being the greatest right-handed hitter of all time.

Once during one of their yearly debate sessions on the greatest hitters of all-time Williams asserted that Hornsby was one of the greatest of all-time.

Production started in 1891 by Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham, Lincolnshire, England under the title Hornsby Akroyd Patent Oil Engine under licence.
