Gérard Houllier was appointed co-manager in the 1998 – 99 season and became the sole manager in November 1998 after Evans resigned.

At the end of 2003 – 04, Gérard Houllier was sacked as manager of Liverpool despite having won four cup competitions ( including three in one season ) during his six-year spell as manager.

An official statement on Lyon's website stated that Houllier asked to be released from the last season of his contract and that request was granted by the president.

On 8 September 2010, it was announced that English club Aston Villa had appointed Houllier as their new full-time manager, following the resignation of previous boss Martin O ' Neill the month before.

Houllier chose to rest a number of key first-team players, a move that was criticised by fans and the media alike.

Prior to the game, a banner reading " Had enough, Houllier out " was unveiled by some supporters in the stadium's Holte End stand.

On 20 April, Houllier was admitted to hospital after falling ill in the night.

Heskey was linked with a £ 12 million move to Tottenham Hotspur in December 2002, but Houllier insisted he was a part of his long-term plans and he remained at Liverpool.

The 2002 – 03 season saw him score nine goals in 51 appearances for Liverpool and received criticism for his low goal to game ratio, with Houllier claiming that his future at the club was safe.
