If he thus achieves a lyrical, dreamlike, drugged intensity, he pays the price for his indulgence by producing work -- Allen Ginsberg's `` Howl '' is a striking example of this tendency -- that is disoriented, Dionysian but without depth and without Apollonian control.

Howl realizes that Sophie is under a spell and secretly attempts to remove the curse ; when met with failure, he comes to the conclusion that Sophie simply enjoys being in disguise.

Howl is able to stop the demon but fails because Miss Angorian took hold of Calcifer and tried to squeeze Howl's heart out of him.

Howl's house is in fact based in a seaside town named Porthaven ; Howl also occupies a disguised stable in Kingsbury.

However, after Howl is forced into hiding he changes the door's destinations to: in Market Chipping ( yellow ), in Vale End ( orange ), a garden in the waste ( purple ), and in Wales ( black ).

Wizard Howl is a mysterious, reclusive wizard who is 27 years old, with a terrible reputation.

He is known by a number of aliases ; by birth, he is Howell Jenkins, but he goes by " Howl Jenkins " in Porthaven and his preferred " Howl Pendragon " in Kingsbury.

When Howl was young, he gave Calcifer his heart in order for the fire demon to continue living because he felt sorry for him-this is implied to have sapped his humanity somewhat, and will continue to do so till he ends up like the Witch of the Waste.

And in 1989, Linda Ronstadt recorded the album Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, which featured four Jimmy Webb songs: " Still Within the Sound of My Voice " ( with Webb playing piano ), " Adios " ( with orchestral arrangement by Webb ), " I Keep It Hid " ( with Webb playing piano ), and " Shattered ".

This was followed in quick succession by Thirty Spanish Poems of Love and Exile translated by Kenneth Rexroth and Poems of Humor & Protest by Kenneth Patchen, but it was the impact of the fourth volume, Howl and Other Poems ( 1956 ) by Allen Ginsberg that brought national attention to the author and publisher.
