The link with Methodism came when Hugh Bourne moved to Harriseahead in 1800 having bought an oak woodland there to supply pit props in Stonetrough Colliery and other local mines.

The Wesleyan Methodists disapproved and subsequently expelled Hugh Bourne " because you have a tendency to set up other than the ordinary worship " which led eventually to the formation of the Primitive Methodist Church.

After Hugh Bourne and a significant number of his colleagues, including the Standley Methodist Society, had been put out of membership of the Burslem Wesleyan Circuit, they formed a group known as the Camp Meeting Methodists until 1811 when they joined with the followers of William Clowes, the " Clowesites ".

This led, in 1811, to two groups joining together, the ' Camp Meeting Methodists ' and the ' Clowesites ' led by Hugh Bourne and William Clowes respectively.

Hugh Bourne Primitive Methodist Chapel was built on Jumble Lane ( now Kinder Road ) in 1867 and deconsecrated in 1969, its congregation merging into St John's.
