Charles Evans Hughes, Sr. ( April 11, 1862 – August 27, 1948 ) was an American statesman, lawyer and Republican politician from New York.

The first roller cone patent was for the rotary rock bit and was issued to Howard Hughes Sr. in 1909.

The character may be a reference to Richard Nixon's meetings with Clint Murchison, Sr., although he also illuminates Nixon's relationships with Howard Hughes, H. L. Hunt and other entrepreneurs.

Hughes Sr., originally from Prince Edward County, Virginia, was a farmer, sheriff and a member of the Tennessee legislature from 1842 – 1843, Mary Hubbard was a native of Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

Hughes Sr. died in Texas in 1844, making Hughes at orphan at the age of fourteen.

He falls in love with Laura Hughes, the secret daughter of Gloria Swanson and Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., half sister of the Kennedy brothers.

The national political leaders included Theodore Roosevelt, Robert M. La Follette, Sr., Charles Evans Hughes and Herbert Hoover on the Republican side, and William Jennings Bryan, Woodrow Wilson and Al Smith on the Democratic side.

Under Howard Jr .' s ownership, Hughes Tool ventured into the motion picture business via Hughes Productions during the 1920s, and into the airline business in 1939 with the acquisition of a controlling interest in Transcontinental and Western Air ( later renamed Trans World Airlines ).

After Hughes Sr .' s death in 1924, his only child, Howard R. Hughes, Jr., assumed control of the company as its sole owner.

Hughes Corp .' s assets will include Summerlin, a master-planned community in Las Vegas, and South Street Seaport, a shopping center in Manhattan.

In 1947, Howard Hughes redirected the Hughes Aircraft Co .' s efforts from airplanes to helicopters.
