* IRIX Interactive Desktop

IRIX Interactive Desktop ( formerly called Indigo Magic Desktop ) is a desktop environment normally used as the default desktop on Silicon Graphics workstations running IRIX.

The IRIX Interactive Desktop uses the Motif widget toolkit on top of the X Window System found on most Unix systems.

The default window manager on the IRIX Interactive Desktop is 4Dwm.

The IRIX Interactive Desktop was preceded by the IRIS Workspace in IRIX versions 3. 0 through 5. 0, and was one of the first default desktop environments to be standard on a particular Unix computer system.

The Indigo Magic name was later changed to IRIX Interactive Desktop with the release of IRIX 6. 5 in 1998.

IRIX Interactive Desktop has two primary components: the System Manager and the Toolchest.

On September 6, 2006, SGI announced the end of development for the MIPS / IRIX line and the IRIX operating system.

IRIX 5. 0, released in 1993, incorporated certain features of UNIX System V Release 4, including ELF-format executables.

Silicon Graphics started developing XFS in 1993, with first deployment on IRIX 5. 3 in 1994.

It is available on Linux and BSD for Intel x86 ; Linux for Alpha ; Mac OS X for Intel x86 and PowerPC ; and Solaris, IRIX, and HP-UX on their native platforms.

Originally developed on IRIX, Freeciv has been ported to many different operating systems: it is distributed with many Linux distributions, offers installers for Microsoft Windows, and has been known to run on Mac OS X, Solaris, Ultrix, QNX, OS / 2, Cygwin, AmigaOS, RISC OS, Maemo, ZETA, SkyOS and various BSDs.

IRIX is a computer operating system developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc. ( SGI ) to run natively on their MIPS architecture workstations and servers.

IRIX 3. x was based on UNIX System V Release 3 with 4. 3BSD enhancements, and incorporated the 4Sight windowing system, based on NeWS and IRIS GL.

MySQL works on many different system platforms, including AIX, BSDi, FreeBSD, HP-UX, eComStation, i5 / OS, IRIX, Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, NetBSD, Novell NetWare, OpenBSD, OpenSolaris, OS / 2 Warp, QNX, Solaris, Symbian, SunOS, SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare, Sanos and Tru64.

SGI used Transitive Corporation's QuickTransit software to allow their old MIPS / IRIX applications to run ( in emulation ) on the new Itanium / Linux platform.

XFS releases on IRIX incorporated an integrated volume manager called XLV.

Nmap runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, HP-UX and BSD variants ( including Mac OS X ), and also on AmigaOS and SGI IRIX.

4Dwm is a window manager normally used on Silicon Graphics workstations running IRIX.

4Dwm on IRIX was one of the first default graphical user interface desktops to be standard on a particular Unix computer system.

DBX is a proprietary source-level debugger found primarily on Solaris, AIX, IRIX, Tru64 UNIX, GNU / Linux and BSD operating systems.

By the mid 1990s, public clusters consisted of the Solaris operating system on SPARC hardware from Sun Microsystems, and the IRIX operating system on MIPS hardware from Silicon Graphics, Inc. ( SGI ).

Over the years Cmix / RTcmix has run on a variety of computer platforms and operating systems, including NeXT, Sun Microsystems, IRIX, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Even on similar systems, the details of implementing a compatibility layer can be quite intricate and troublesome ; a good example is the IRIX binary compatibility layer in the MIPS architecture version of NetBSD.

The CAVELib API is platform-independent, enabling developers to create high-end virtual reality applications on Windows and Linux operating systems ( IRIX, Solaris, and HP-UX are no longer supported ).

IRIX 5. 1, the first operating system for the Indy, did not take full advantage of the hardware due to inadequate memory management.
