Iaido is the usual term to refer to the modern self-improvement oriented-form taught e. g. by the All Japan Kendo Federation ( AJKF ), while Iaijutsu is used for some amongst the older koryū combative techniques.

Seitei Iaido ( 制定 ) (" basis of the Iaido ") or Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei Iaido is the standard set of iaido kata created in 1968 by a committee formed by the All Japan Kendo Federation ( AJKF, Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei or ZNKR ).

Being an extremely standardized form, Seitei Iaido is practiced not only in Japan, but all over the world in very similar way.

This is essentially the ZNIR equivalent of the Seitei Iaido set.

This means that unlike modern martial ways such as Kendo or Iaido, which concentrate on one specific area of training, study is made of a broad range of martial skills.

She has also studied T ' ai chi ch ' uan, is a sandan in Hakko Ryu Jujutsu, a yondan in Seibukan Jujutsu and a shodan in Iaido.

Some classic ( koryū ) Iaido styles, like the Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū school, establishes this " waiting stance " as the kaishakunin having taken one step back with the right foot, katana behind his head parallel to the floor held with the right hand, left hand holding the scabbard in the proper ( sayabiki ) position ; other styles, like Musō Shinden-ryū, establishes that the katana is to be held vertically, parallel to the body, held in the right hand, the left hand resting at the kaishakunin side, feet together.

He held the title of an Aikikai shihan and created a new school of Iaido with forms from aikido, called Aiki Toho Iaido or Nishio-ryu Iai.

Still preserved in modern-day movements ( kata ) of the martial art, Iaido, the ritual of performing kaishaku varies very little between Japanese fencing schools, but all of them are bound to the following steps to be performed by the kaishakunin:

Iaido does include competition in form of kata but does not use sparring of any kind.

Iaido forms ( kata ) are performed solitarily against one or more imaginary opponents.

The All Japan Iaido Federation ( ZNIR, Zen Nihon Iaido Renmei, founded 1948 ) has a set of five iaido forms, Tōhō Iaido.

Different lines and Iaido organisations often recognise different people as their sōke.

Kendo, a swordsmanship-based sport art, and Iaido, the way of drawing the sword and re-sheathing it, as well as cutting an opponent with it, are of note here.
