The Gospel of John and the Gospel of Luke also mention a " Mary of Bethany ", who in some Christian traditions is regarded the same person as Mary Magdalene.

" Mary of Bethany " itself is an anachronism, as she is just referred to as " Mary " both in and the Gospel of John.

A narrative in which Mary of Bethany plays a central role ( in at least one of the accounts ) is the anointing of Jesus, an event reported by the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel of John in which a woman pours the entire contents of an alabastron of very expensive perfume over the head or feet of Jesus.

The Gospel of Luke states that the event took place ' in the vicinity of Bethany ' and the Gospel of Mark specifies no location.

For instance, the Monday Gospel tells of the Anointing at Bethany (), which occurred before the Palm Sunday event described in.

In America, the designation of the building in which Open Brethren assemblies meet most often include the word " Chapel " in their formal name, combined with a biblical place name or principle or otherwise a local geographic feature — for instance, Bethany Chapel, Central Gospel Chapel, Park Road Bible Chapel, Riverview Believers Chapel.

F. F. Bruce ( 1974 ) saw the story of the young man of Bethany clumsily based on the raising of Lazarus in the Gospel of John.

Gospel of Matthew 21: 1 ; Gospel of Mark 11: 1 ; Gospel of Luke 19: 29 mention it as close to Bethany.

From this it is possible to deduce that the mention of Simon the Leper at Bethany in Mark's Gospel suggests that the Essenes, or pious patrons from Jerusalem who held to a closely similar view of ideal arrangements, settled lepers at Bethany.

A second place named Bethany is mentioned in the Gospel of John as being located on the east bank of the Jordan River.

At the end of this period, the Gospel of John includes the Raising of Lazarus episode in John 11: 1-46 in which Jesus brings Lazarus of Bethany back to life four days after his burial.

Mark says that Jesus was in Bethany relaxing at the home of Simon the Leper, who has not appeared in the Gospel until now.
