He has announced himself as a candidate for the leadership of Plaid Cymru following the announcement of the resignation of Ieuan Wyn Jones following the 2011 Assembly elections.

In 2001, he was voted Welsh Politician of the Year, and he was being pressured by former colleagues to become the next president of his party, following the resignation of Ieuan Wyn Jones as president.

They were formed as a splinter from Plaid Cymru in January 2000, when that party's leader Ieuan Wyn Jones distanced Plaid from supporting Welsh independence.

The Hymn to the Virgin was written by Ieuan at Oxford in about 1470 and uses Welsh orthography ; for exampl:

As a young solicitor he had worked in Ruthin alongside future Plaid Cymru Deputy Welsh First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones.

The current Welsh Government Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science is Edwina Hart, although Ieuan W Jones was the Minister for the Economy and Transport at the time of the merger.
