Colin Macmillan Turnbull ( November 23, 1924 – July 28, 1994 ) was a British-American anthropologist who came to public attention with the popular books The Forest People ( on the Mbuti Pygmies of Zaire ) and The Mountain People ( on the Ik people of Uganda ), and one of the first anthropologists to work in the field of ethnomusicology.

In 1972, he wrote a sequel of sorts, the highly controversial The Mountain People, which was concerned with Uganda's hunger-plagued Ik tribe.

Karel Doorman is often honoured because he is said to have signalled " Ik val aan, volg mij " (" I attack, follow me ") during the Battle of the Java Sea, which was considered very gallant.

While the second half of the program was the same kind of straightforward, nonsensical humor that had always been his hallmark, the first half of the new show entitled " Ik heb je lief " ( a deeper statement than " I love you ", not unlike " I love thee ") consisted only of songs, in a mixture of simple jazz and French-style " chanson ", that were tributes to love and, indirectly, to his late wife.

* Heine adds, "... Turnbull's account of Ik culture turned out to be at variance with most observations we made — to the extent that at times I was under the impression that I was dealing with an entirely different people.

Turnbull also argued that Ik society was already destroyed and all that could be done was to save individual tribal members.

The Ik were displaced from their ancestral lands and forced into famine.

His graphic descriptions were placed into context by the careful interviews he did with older Ik to contrast the older society that existed prior to displacement to create a park.

The creation of individual countries made life for the tribal Ik more difficult because they were forced out of their nomadic lifestyle into a settlement based around a newly founded national park that practically destroyed their livelihood by restricting their hunting grounds to specific non-park areas.

He depicts the Ik as a people forced into extreme individualistic practices in order to survive.

In reference to his name and crutch, he often said " Ik ben rijk en wel gestelt " (" I am rich and well off ", a pun on his name Rijckaert ( rijck means rich, while rijkaard means rich man ), and having to use a crutch ( gestelt means with a crutch, while welgesteld means well off ).

Bonset ( possibly an anagram of " Ik ben zot ", Dutch for " I am foolish ").

Overall, living with the Ik seems to have afflicted Turnbull more with melancholy and depression than anger, and he dedicated his work " to the Ik, whom I learned not to hate ".
