Mohawk is east of the Village of Ilion and on the opposite shore of the Mohawk River from the Village of Herkimer.

Ahhiya ( wa ) has been identified with the Achaeans of the Trojan War and the city of Wilusa with the legendary city of Troy ( note the similarity with early Greek Wilion, later Ilion, the name of the acropolis of Troy ).

This has been taken as a hint that he may have been an early Greek ruler called Alexander, and he has been associated with Homer's Alexandros of Ilion, who is better known by his nickname Paris, of Troy.

Another story is the one of his love for Nireus, who was " the most beautiful man who came beneath Ilion " ( Iliad, 673 ).

Ilion is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter, the other villages having incorporated or re-incorporated under the provisions of Village Law.

However, this story may reflect a cultural influence which had the reverse direction: Hittite cuneiform texts mention a Minor Asian god called Appaliunas or Apalunas in connection with the city of Wilusa attested in Hittite inscriptions, which is now generally regarded as being identical with the Greek Ilion by most scholars.

There Ilus later, following a cow, founded the city of Ilion, known as Troy.
