Garden's impressions of the legendary rugby league commentator Eddie Waring and the popular Scottish TV presenter Fyfe Robertson, Oddie's frequent send-ups of the game-show host Hughie Green and Cleese's occasional but manic impressions of Patrick Moore ( astronomer and broadcaster ) built these people into eccentric celebrities in a way that the Mike Yarwood, Rory Bremner, Spitting Image and Dead Ringers programmes would do for other TV presenters with similar disrespect years later.

In July 1978, Lydon officially named the band " Public Image " ( the " Ltd " was not added until several months later ), after the Muriel Spark novel The Public Image.

Pope also wrote or co-wrote many comic songs for Not the Nine O ' Clock News and Spitting Image including British Number 1 hit single " The Chicken Song " with Rob Grant & Doug Naylor and along with Simon Franglen, he did the main theme for Round the Bend for Yorkshire TV, a three series comedy shown on CITV, later shown on Channel 4 and Nickelodeon.

Vicious began his musical career in 1976 as a member of The Flowers of Romance along with former co-founding member of The Clash, Keith Levene ( who later co-founded John Lydon's post-Pistols project Public Image Limited ) and Palmolive and Viv Albertine, who would later form The Slits.

" Keith Levene, a member of The Flowers of Romance with Vicious and later a member of The Clash and then Public Image Ltd, also recounts a similar story: " Could Sid play bass?

Nick Turner left to form The Barracudas and Richard Dudanski ( exThe 101 ' ers and later Public Image Ltd .) sat in on drums and film maker Patrick Keiller replaced Jeremie Frank on guitar.

The band never played live or released any recordings, and, like London SS and Masters of the Backside, are more famed for the number of band members that later became well known, including: Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, Keith Levene ( an early member of The Clash and later of Public Image Ltd ) and Palmolive and Viv Albertine, who went on to play in The Slits.

The song " Belsen Was a Gas " originates from this band, and was later performed live by the Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd, as well as Sid Vicious ' solo act.

The group later became the Image Processing Research Department of AT & T Laboratories when AT & T spun off Lucent Technologies in 1996.
