Archdeacon Robert Johnson ( 1540 – 1625 ) was Rector of North Luffenham for 51 years, from 1574 until his death ; he founded Oakham and Uppingham Schools in 1584, as well as other charitable institutions including almshouses.

The Battle of Lepanto in 1571 ( which was triggered by the Ottoman capture of Venetian-controlled Cyprus in 1570 ) was another major setback for Ottoman naval supremacy in the Mediterranean Sea, despite the fact that an equally large Ottoman fleet was built in a short time and Tunisia was recovered from Spain in 1574.

Selim II ( Ottoman Turkish: سليم ثانى Selīm-i < u > s </ u > ānī, Turkish: II. Selim ; 28 May 1524 – 12 December / 15 December 1574 ), also known as " Selim the Sot ( Mest )" or " Selim the Drunkard "; and as " Sarı Selim " or " Selim the Blond ", was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 until his death in 1574.
