In 1605 a medal was struck commemorating the King ’ s escape from the Gunpowder Plot that pictured a serpent among flowers. Macbeth cannot be dated precisely, owing to significant evidence of later revisions.

In 1605, to commemorate King James ’ escape, a medal was struck picturing a serpent hiding among lilies and roses.

Facsimile of the first page of Macbeth from the First Folio, published in 1623Scholars also cite an entertainment seen by King James at Oxford in the summer of 1605 that featured three " sibyls " like the weird sisters ; Kermode surmises that Shakespeare could have heard about this and alluded to it with the weird sisters.

Other possible sources are the anonymous play King Leir ( published in 1605 ); A Mirror for Magistrates ( 1574 ), by John Higgins ; The Malcontent ( 1604 ), by John Marston ; The London Prodigal ( 1605 ); Arcadia ( 1580 – 1590 ), by Sir Philip Sidney, from which Shakespeare took the main outline of the Gloucester subplot ; Montaigne's Essays, which were translated into English by John Florio in 1603 ; An Historical Description of Iland of Britaine, by William Harrison ; Remaines Concerning Britaine, by William Camden ( 1606 ); Albion's England, by William Warner, ( 1589 ); and A Declaration of egregious Popish Impostures, by Samuel Harsnett ( 1603 ), which provided some of the language used by Edgar while he feigns madness.

In his Arden edition, R. A. Foakes argues for a date of 1605 – 6, because one of Shakespeare's sources, The True Chronicle History of King Leir, was not published until 1605 ; close correspondences between that play and Shakespeare's suggest that he may have been working from a text ( rather than from recollections of a performance ).

King James raised him to the peerage on 20 August 1603 as Baron Cecil, of Essendon in the County of Rutland, before creating him Viscount Cranborne in 1604 and then Earl of Salisbury in 1605.

He re-entered himself into Pembroke Hall, where he was first a fellow and was elected master on 1 November 1605, remaining in that position until 1616, when he resigned because accusations totalling fifty-seven articles were made against him, by the Fellows of Pembroke to King James I.
