* House of Wittelsbach or House of Palatinate – Zweibrücken-Kleeburg ( 1654 – 1720 )

The House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, a branch of the Wittelsbach dynasty, was the Royal House of Sweden from 1654 to 1720.

Members of the family served as Dukes, Electors and Kings of Bavaria ( 1180 – 1918 ), Counts Palatine of the Rhine ( 1214 – 1803 and 1816 – 1918 ), Margraves of Brandenburg ( 1323 – 1373 ), Counts of Holland, Hainaut and Zeeland ( 1345 – 1432 ), Elector-Archbishops of Cologne ( 1583 – 1761 ), Dukes of Jülich and Berg ( 1614 – 1794 / 1806 ), Kings of Sweden ( 1441 – 1448 and 1654 – 1720 ) and Dukes of Bremen-Verden ( 1654 – 1719 ).

Despite the Stuart family connections through Henrietta Maria and the Princess of Orange, France and the Dutch Republic allied themselves with Cromwell's government from 1654, forcing Charles to turn for aid to Spain, which at that time ruled the Southern Netherlands.

Jacob Bernoulli ( also known as James or Jacques ) ( 27 December 1654 – 16 August 1705 ) was one of the many prominent mathematicians in the Bernoulli family.

Then Ludlow left Virginia to return to England and made it to Ireland by September 1654.

* January 20 – Russo-Polish War ( 1654 – 1667 ): Poland cedes Kiev, Smolensk, and eastern Ukraine to Russia in the Treaty of Andrusovo, which puts a final end to Poland's status as a Central European power.

The Tribes lost much of their power within Galway city after English Parliamentarians took over the Galway Corporation in 1654.
