This misbehaviour caused the Lord Chamberlain to declare his contract void and at the same time order him to stay with the Patent Company until January 1697, to give Rich time to find a replacement.

" The Italians were expelled from France in 1697 for satirizing King Louis XIV's second wife, Madame de Maintenon, but returned in 1716 ( after his death ), when Tommaso Antonio Vicentini (" Thomassin ", 1682 – 1739 ) became famous in the part.

His second wife, whom he married in 1715, was Ulrika Eleonora, Princess of Sweden, ( 1688 – 1741 ), daughter of Charles XI of Sweden ( 1655 – 1697 ) and of Ulrike Eleonora of Denmark ( 1656 – 1693 ).

Pierre Murat-Jordy was the son of Guillaume Murat ( 1692 – 1754 ) and his wife Marguerite Herbeil ( d. 1755 ); paternal grandson of Pierre Murat, born in 1634, and wife Catherine Badourès, who died in 1697 ; and maternal grandson of Bertrand Herbeil and wife Anne Roques.

Along with the subsidiary titles Viscount of Riccartoun and Lord Hillhouse, it was created on the 14th of April, 1697, for Lord John Douglas-Hamilton, fourth ( third surviving ) son of William Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk, and his wife Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton.

He was murdered in 1697 on the road between Bologna and Ferrara, by the agents of a nobleman with whose wife he had a liaison.

His widow, Elizabeth, became the second wife of William Smith ( 1697 – 1769 ) in 1761.

His wife persevered in her attempts to save his life, but her efforts were fruitless, and Fenwick was beheaded in London on 28 January 1697, with the same formalities as were usually observed at the execution of a peer.

A one-act comedy, Le Café, failed in 1694, and he was not much happier with a more ambitious play, Le Flatteur ( 1696 ), or with the opera Venus et Adonis ( 1697 ).

French and English colonists, and their Indian allies, then engaged in a protracted border war that was formally ended when the Treaty of Ryswick was signed in 1697.
