Allen appeared before the Continental Congress as early as September 1778 on behalf of Vermont, seeking recognition as an independent state.

In his Systema Naturae, published in 1767, Carl von Linné ( 1707 – 1778 ) catalogued all the living creatures into a single system that defined their morphological relations to one another: the Linnean classification system.

The English version and his own translation into German ( published 1778 – 1780 ) earned the young author real fame.

In 1778, He published his method of reducing Lunar Distances for computing the longitude, still regarded as the best of several similar mathematical procedures for navigation and position-fixing in pre-chronometer days ; and used, for example, by Lewis and Clarke to measure their latitude and longitude during their exploration of the North-western United States.

Other major 18th century English novelists are Samuel Richardson ( 1689-1761 ), author of the epistolary novels Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded ( 1740 ) and Clarissa ( 1747-8 ); Henry Fielding ( 1707 – 54 ), who wrote Joseph Andrews ( 1742 ) and The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling ( 1749 ); Laurence Sterne ( 1713 – 68 ) who published Tristram Shandy in parts between 1759 and 1767 ; Oliver Goldsmith (? 1730-74 ) author of The Vicar of Wakefield ( 1766 ); Tobias Smollett ( 1721 – 71 ) a Scottish novelist best known for his comic picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle ( 1751 ) and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker ( 1771 ), who influenced Charles Dickens ; and Fanny Burney ( 1752-1840 ), whose novels " were enjoyed and admired by Jane Austen ," wrote Evelina ( 1778 ), Cecilia ( 1782 ) and Camilla ( 1796 ).

These works ( particularly the one published in 1778 ), and most specifically the accurate copies of the cuneiform inscriptions found at Persepolis, were to prove to be extremely important to the decipherment of cuneiform writing.

He also published a periodical Der Naturforscher ( 1774 – 1778 ), and during the years 1749-1756 took an active part in editing the Zeitungen von gelehrten Sachen.

After a preparation of thirty-five years, Toup's edition of Longinus, in Greek and Latin, was published in 1778.
