John Graves Simcoe ( February 25, 1752 – October 26, 1806 ) was a British army officer and the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791 – 1796.

Reports from expeditions in 1806 by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike and in 1819 by Major Stephen Long described the Great Plains as " unfit for human habitation " and as " The Great American Desert ".

Early in 1806, he was given a commission, and as a Second Lieutenant he served in the Jena and Eylau campaigns, winning his promotion to the rank of lieutenant at the Battle of Pultusk.

He became a Midshipman in 1806 and some seven years later was a First Lieutenant.

In 1806, Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, under orders to ascertain the source of the Red River, ascended the Arkansas River, made his way downstream on what turned out to be the Rio Grande, and was sent home by the Spanish authorities.

Hardwicke was Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire from 1780 to 1790, following the Whig traditions of his family, but after his succession to the earldom in 1790 he supported William Pitt The Younger, and took office in 1801 as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland ( 1801 – 1806 ), where he supported Catholic emancipation.

During this conflict, Soulouque became a respected soldier and as a consequence he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army of Haïti in 1806 and made aide-de-camp to General Lamarre.

Moore kept a detailed diary from 1784 until 1806, later published in thirty-seven volumes, which provides a unique account of his service as Lieutenant, Commander and Captain.

Later, in the nineteenth century, William Elliot, Whig member from 1802 until his death in 1819, was Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1806 and 1807 ; the Hon.

Paris Chipman Dunning ( March 15, 1806 – May 9, 1884 ) was a Democratic state representative, state senator, senate president pro tempore, the tenth Lieutenant Governor, and the ninth Governor of the U. S. state of Indiana from December 26, 1848 to December 5, 1849.

In 1806, the number of Superior Court judges was increased from five to nine and those judges, sitting together, constituted the Supreme Court, replacing the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Council Members.

Its name is in honor of General Zebulon Pike, of New Jersey, an explorer who led an expedition to southern Colorado and discovered Pikes Peak in 1806.

The Sauk leader Quashquame led a village of Sauk, Meskwaki, and Ioway near Rocheport along Moniteau Creek in the first decade of the 19th century ; this village was noted by Zebulon Pike in 1806.

An early reference to the river as the Smoky Hill was by American explorer Zebulon Pike during his 1806 expedition to visit the Pawnee.

In 1806, Wilkinson warned Zebulon Pike, undertaking Pike's Expedition, to prevent Lisa's efforts to make business connections to Santa Fe.

On June 24, 1806, General James Wilkinson, commander of the Western Department, ordered Captain Zebulon Pike, then age 27, to lead an expedition to the western and southern areas of the Louisiana Purchase to map the terrain and contact the Native American peoples, and to find the headwaters of the Red River.

In 1806, Zebulon Pike passed through Kansas and labeled it " the Great American Desert " on his maps.

Wilkinson then sent Zebulon Pike on expeditions to the Southwest in 1805 and 1806 to discover the source of the Mississippi River.

Zebulon Pike led a U. S. Army reconnaissance expedition into the disputed region in 1806.

Other notable explorations included the Pike expedition of 1806 – 07 by Zebulon Pike, the journey along the north bank of the Platte River in 1820 by Stephen H. Long to what came to be called Longs Peak, the John C. Frémont expedition in 1845 – 46, and the Powell Geographic Expedition of 1869 by John Wesley Powell.

Explorer Zebulon Pike first coined the name the Flint Hills in 1806 when he entered into his journal, " passed very ruff flint hills ".

1806 – Spanish Mexico – A platoon under Captain Zebulon Pike invaded Spanish territory at the headwaters of the Rio Grande on orders from General James Wilkinson.

The pass was formed by glacial action and erosion in the region, and its first recorded sighting was by Zebulon Pike in 1806.

One of the earliest sightings by a European-American was in 1806, when Zebulon Pike, mapping the southern boundary of the Louisiana Purchase, spotted the gap in what would later be named the Sawatch Range from the upper Arkansas River valley.

The river is mentioned in accounts by Zebulon Pike ( 1806 ), Thomas Nuttall ( 1818 ), and because of the fur trade had numerous trading posts along its route.
