In 1808 he published The Simpliciad, this satirical poem was addressed in verse to William Wordsworth, Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, with notes relating to his parodies and allusions to the originals.

At Bristol in 1808 he caught up with Southey, whom he had missed on a trip to the Lake District in the previous year, and the mutual appreciation of the two poets led to a warm friendship.

Don Manuel Francisco Domingo de Godoy ( di Bassano ) y Álvarez de Faria, de los Ríos y Sánchez-Zarzosa, also Manuel de Godoy y Álvarez de Faria de los Ríos Sánchez Zarzosa ( May 12, 1767 – October 4 / 7, 1851 ), was Prime Minister of Spain from 1792 to 1797 and from 1801 to 1808.

Don Agustin Fernando Muñoz y Sánchez, 1st Duke of Riánsares, Grandee of Spain ( es: Don Agustín Fernández Muñoz, duque de Riansares ) ( 4 May 1808 – 11 September 1873 ) was the second but morganatic husband of Maria Christina, Regent of Spain.

However, Jovellanos had been imprisoned by Manuel de Godoy, Duke of Alcudia, who had served as Prime Minister of Spain and virtually ran the country as a dictator from 1792 until 1798 and from 1801 until 1808.

Manuel Isidoro Belzu Humerez ( 14 April 1808 – 23 March 1865 ) was president of Bolivia from 1848 to 1855.
