Andrew Pickens, Jr. ( December 13, 1779 – July 1, 1838 ) was an American military and political leader who served as the 46th Governor of South Carolina from 1816 until 1818.

He represented New York in the United States Senate, served as Minister to Britain, and was the Federalist candidate for both Vice President ( 1804, 1808 ) and President of the United States ( 1816 ).

In Martin v. Hunter's Lessee ( 1816 ), the Supreme Court confronted the Chief Justice of Virginia, Spencer Roane, who had previously declared a Supreme Court decision unconstitutional and refused to permit the state courts to abide by it.

This is probably John Johnson of Knox County, delegate to the State constitutional convention, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1816.

William Tod Otto ( January 19, 1816 – November 7, 1905 ) was an American judge and the eighth reporter of decisions of the United States Supreme Court, serving as reporter from 1875 to 1883.

A portion of this estate, devised to nephew Denny Martin Fairfax, was later the subject of the landmark U. S. Supreme Court case Martin v. Hunter's Lessee ( 1816 ).

After 1816 the Federalists had no national influence apart from John Marshall's Supreme Court.

Skinner became an Assistant Judge on the Vermont Supreme Court in 1815 and 1816, but declined the office of Chief Justice in 1817.
